Public to name Melbourne’s five new underground Metro Rail stations

We should name them after well known identities:-

Attila the Hun
Genghis Khan
Margaret Thatcher
Ned Kelly
Lurgi the Wonder Dog.

You left out the most infamous of them all.

Are you, perhaps, saving the name for when we rename Flinders Street?

It's a silly stunt.

Arden, Parkville, Melbourne Central, Flinders Street / City Square and Domain. You know it makes sense.
Agree.
Station names should be representative of the the geographic area/suburb they serve.
I disagree that 'City Square' should get a mention as, basically, we do not have a City Square. We have a few paltry square metres of concrete that are, as often as not, given over to some commercial enterprise or other to the detriment of the community at large.
Perhaps the time is right for 'Princes Bridge' to return. Even St Paul's would be far better than 'City Square'.
I am waiting for some dhead to nominate Young and Jacksons.................
Indeed Melbourne was deliberately designed not to have a central square.
I was trying to think of a name that indicates that Flinders Street station is connected to the new station, as well as the fact that the other end will be at Collins Street.
Were there developers and brown paper envelopes even in those days. Of course there were!!!!Sad
YM-Mundrabilla
I'm sure there were, however I was referring to a story I have heard about why Melbourne never had a central square. Apparently Hoddle wanted to include one, but the Governor was afraid that revolutionaries might gather there, so he killed the idea. I believe this was the same governor who insisted that every second street in the city be exactly half as wide as the main streets.

Maybe one of the history buffs on these boards can provide more detail Wink

Unless there is a direct connection to the major tram terminus of the same name I would not be naming a station Melbourne University.

Conversely, if there is a direct connection between the Metro stations and City Loop stations (i.e. one does not have to touch off and then on again to change trains) then they should retain the names of Flinders Street and Melbourne Central. Remember that trains running through the Metro tunnel will not be classed as a different mode to existing metropolitan trains.

Thanks Steve. Interesting!
Perhaps even some Governors are dodgy when it comes to land rats.!!
I think that we should clear the block surrounded by Flinders, Elizabeth, Swanston and Collins Streets for a City Square.
I think also that we should ban 'revolutionaries' here on RP too............. Smile

My suggestion

Arden
University/Hospitals  (a bit long I know)
Latrobe Street
Swanston Street
Domain
South Yarra.....  opps

I've nominated Trainey McTrainface

"Names should be easy to pronounce, spell and write
  • no longer than three words or 25 characters in total (e.g. Southern Cross Station)"

Phew. Two words. Vote 1 Trainey McTrainface.

Though Stoppy McStopface or Station McStationface would be equal contenders.

Location: Melton, where the sparks dare not roam!
Arden - Northy McNorthface

Parkville - Uni McUniface

CBD North - Library McLibraryface

CBD South - Town-Hall McHallface

Domain - Shriney McShrineface

or alternatively just something simple and straight to the point, just go for the street names;
Arden St
Grattan St
La Trobe St
Collins St
St Kilda Rd.

So I guess that rules out Library McLibraryface then. Nuts.

A woodford opinion you have been warned.

I think the general public is being underestimated in this thread, the name Southern Cross VERY likely came from a politician, if the general public was naming it it would still be Spencer st. Its leaving namimg to politicians or developers that lead to stupid names. Its the the general public who is doing the naming that will be using these stations, as a consequence the station names will very likely be logical.

Woodford,
Well said.
Keep the politicians and developers out of it.
Stick with simple, geologically descriptive/meaningful names.

Ohh...like 'Central' station in Sydney Question

The closest station in Sydney to being central to that City is likely Town Hall.

Melbourne's railway authority Melbourne Metro has invited the public to suggest names for five new Metro Tunnel stations across the city. More than 10,000 suggestions were made in the first 48 hours, with numerous Game of Thrones references amongst the most pitched.
....
"Appropriately, many people want to become 'King of CBD North' by nominating that station as Winterfell," Melbourne Metro's media team said.
MashableAustralia
  justapassenger Minister for Railways

Stations named with a Game of Thrones theme could be a handy tourist attraction, a bit like the trolley sticking out of the pillar at London Kings Cross (a tribute to Harry Potter) or the statue of Paddington Bear at London Paddington.

I've voted in favour Smile

People might like to  read the rules for suggested names..........................

---------------------------------------------quote--------------------------------------------------------

Names should be easy to pronounce, spell and write

no longer than three words or 25 characters in total (e.g. Southern Cross Station)
an exception is Aboriginal language names which may at first appear complex but will, over time, become familiar and easy to use (e.g. Birrarung Marr)

If you wish to name a station after a person

the person should have been held in high regard by the community and preferably have some connection to the location
the names of people who are still alive must be avoided

Names should be relevant to the specific location

names should reflect the history of the local area and iconic locations nearby
if you think any of the current working names is indeed the best choice, feel free to make them your suggestion

Think about the long term effects of the name

will it continue to make sense to future generations of commuters, businesses, tourists and other visitors?

------------------------------------------End quote----------------------------------------------------

Note: Southern Cross station does NOT match ANY of these rules........................

These rule out most of the posts in this thread SmileWink

I really like Game Of Thrones, but Winterfell? No.

Naming stations after pop culture references is just a really stupid idea.

Well Ivanhoe was named after a fictional character in a popular novel by Sir Walter Scott. There are probably other instances of this sort of thing around Melbourne.

Our great, great, great grandparents were swept up with popular culture and succumbed to this sort of thing. However that is no reason for us to replicate their actions.

We should all remember that this whole name a station thing is nothing more than a cheap, populist, political stunt. Confused

And for that reason, swamping the website with silly names is the perfect response to that sort of stunt.

With that in mind, I've just voted for Winterfell again.
