NR109 NR78 with the usual Expedition consist of 36 carriages.
8050 as terminal shunter.
Do the same locos that work The Ghan from Adelaide to Darwin, then work the return service?Yes they do, the locos are marshalled cab leading/cab following so there is no need to turn them in Darwin.
So, would NR109 and NR75 have arrived in Adelaide with The Ghan on Saturday, 30 September?
With a consist of 36 cars, what are the splitting/marshalling arrangements at each end of the run? And how long does it take to walk the length of such a train?G'day Edison,
Just wondering what the maximum number of carriages of The Ghan consist is.Todays consist of 40 is approximately 920 metres, and the loop lengths on the Darwin line are 1800m +
I think its maximum would be determined by the length of loops along the line.

The longest was last year at 44 carriages for approx. 1,010 metres
However I believe longer consists have run on rare occasions. One was the return of damaged carriages after a derailment Ban Ban in the territory
The Ghan 4DA8 suffered a derailment on Friday 10th November. The last carriage (Motorail carriage) derailed one bogie whilst passing through the Torrens Junction work site.I presume NR74 and NR89 were on the front.
The train was running at walking pace through the construction site at the time of the derailment.
Train was delayed 90 minutes, and there were no injuries
