50 level crossings to be removed

There were some rubbery dates posted by someone on the Level Crossing Removal page

Noble Park opens around February

Clayton opens around April

Murrumbeena opens around June

The whole line would have to be shut down to build the ramps and connect the old line with the new - surely it would all be done in one lot?

Audrey

You aren't thinking like a politician.
3 separate openings means 3 ribbons to cut, 3 media cycles and after all, it's an election year!

So if they're ready to go at different times, then that's what they'll do.
Exactly what I'm predicting they'll do and for the same reasons.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stations were opened on different days for the ability to have 9 press conferences.
John.Z
What a stupid comment.

Are you seriously suggesting that to avoid the possibility of multiple opening ceremonies, the opening of sections or stations that are ready for use be deferred until the entire project is finished?

Preposterous.

The reasoning why they are opening each section at different times because each section has different lengths and construction methods.

Grange Road to Hughesdale is one huge section, and is using the transferring techique by delivering on one site and moving the sections across, this will take the longest to finish.

Meanwhile Noble Park/Clayton sections are shorter and using crane operations, since there is more room to work with along the corridor.

Yes there is a fourth section in Noble Park Chandler road is seperated (not sure the reason, maybe to do with the creek in between) and is the shortest section (using direct crane operations).

As someone noted the connections are trickier in some sections than others.

Politically it makes sense for many level crossing removed all by 2018, hence why you hear something called fastracking (means rushing the project). This applies to the Hurstbridge line, 6 months ahead so done before the election. Skye Road is another one, originally part of the Frankston group, but moved priority and is now part of a different group altogether, so it can be completed as soon as possible. Also due to politics Carrum gets extra bonuses (promenade, new road bridge, brand new stabling rebuilt south of the line) meanwhile others crossings don't get the same special treatment.

Today doesn't make sense - despite the fact that we've now passed the week of city to Moorabbin and Westall closures, starting from today the closure [or so it seems] is changed to be between Caulfield and Dandenong. Yet when I was on a Frankston bound train, an empty movement was occurring in the up direction through Caulfield P3. It also brings me to the fact that today there's train replacements for Traralgon for half the day so [and I quote] "V/Line can bring a fresh fleet of trains to the Gippsland line". Why have a closure when trains are running through it?

Five  (5)  issues here :

- The Government has made their  bed here by endlessly parroting on about  " 50 dangerous/congested level crossings where they all seem to have the booms down for 65 minutes of each peak hour , turning the adjacent road networks into grid lock ". They need to put a fresh twist on it . The punters are sick of the same endless  diatribe for each crossing , after nearly 4 years .Meanwhile the Opposition nitpicks, but would in reality drop the whole program ASAP if elected in favour of their hairbrained intersection  removal project , that will just transfer congestion down the roads .

- Originally the statement from Labor in Opposition was  - to "Remove 50 OF  the most dangerous", NOT  the 50 MOST dangerous lx ."  The Governments "spin doctors" fail dismally to point this out  , as they are too busy arranging photo opportunities for Ministers in flak jackets , joined by the Local Member  for Smeg Creek inspecting the deadly lx .

- The Governments stubborness in still insisting on grade separating Cherry St , Werribee is  RIDICULOUS. Again the public are NOT fools .  A good Minister would simply announce that  Derrimut Road,  Deer Park will be grade separated instead as train traffic on that section has increased by  over  100  train movements a day since RRL opened, whereas at Cherry Street with no Geelong line trains total rail movements per day are now less than 20 in total over 24 hours , less than 1 train per hour .  Simple & logical, but no initiative , no political courage or leadership as usual .

-  Part of the claimed cost blowout , is in fact in that whilst the lx has been removed the opportunity has been taken at the same time to do additional roadworks or minor rail works, like a short section of duplication near Seaholme.  Whist these are good initiatives whilst the resources are there, the AG is correct in asking what sort of Cost/Benefit analysis has been done ?  if any .  The Government is negligent in not explaining that such extra works are being done whilst the resources are on site as it is far more cost effective .

The pork barreling claim will always be made by the Opposition, but the reality here is that the lx are largely being packaged to achieve faster removal and also to achieve better $ value by tendering as packages .

The LX Authority as such is very well managed with project delivery time wise, and ahead of schedule .

The Cherry St crossing is on the "up" side of Werribee station so it deals with all Werribee metro movements. Which Werribee crossing is being grade separated? Are we talking the Cotterell / Werribee Street crossing on the "down side" of the station?

@Altona Loopy he was talking about werribee street, which is being removed.

There must be a few windows of opportunity to run rolling stock transfers through the works area, are goods trains still running ?

Caught the 513 from Eltham so got to see some action at Rosanna this arvo
Platform 2 looks like it's been demolished (couldn't see the platform that well) and some pillars, which I assume are probably drills (too small to be scaffolding) or something.
Platform 1 still remains.

So looks like the two Noble Park sections will be cut In during a shutdown between the 30 Jan to the 14 Feb

Amy reason why the shut down will be so long ? driver draining, a lot of grace ?

Well earlier in this thread it was mentioned that the noble park section would open next month, so It's most likely plopping tracks along that section.
Anyone know how far the rest of the line has progressed? I haven't bothered with the line for some time so an update would be nice.

Works at Buckley street apparently start today. Here is a submission by the Moonee Valley City, but it hasn't made a difference.

Officially confirmed today on the website that the Noble Park section will be opening on the 15th of February 2018.

When did Dandenong become part of Melbourne's west? That seems very odd...

Skye Road is part of the North Western package. And Abbots Road, Dandenong south is part of the Western package. The reasoning behind it is to fast-track the works, despite these crossings in different locations to most of the works in the package. This is done so they would not need to tender the works unto a seperate contract, so they just bundled these crossing to the existing packages to accelerate the works.

this isn't fair. the government is reviewing its spendings over the West but not the East.

Just look at the map to see how many crossing levels have been removed on the Eastern side and yet the amount to spend for just about 82M which is less than half compared to previous projects.

Aviation rd, Aircraft station has been going through community advisory since Dec 2017 and I haven't heard anything from Hobson bay council. I'm worring about this project because I just bought a house there in late last year

I like to hear your thoughts on this plan I drew out. This intersection is a mess and definitely needs major redevelopment.
Realigning the freeway interchange and converting the current strip into a mall is possible since the road based options come cheaper anyways. With this proposal it enables better road and pedestrian connections when the project is finished and into the future.

Just 5 more before the government reaches its target of 20 crossing removals in its first term.

Interestingly I found an old report on grade separation in 2010, that showed Buckley street crossing removal as a road underpass. And also a few other interesting things when it was done site by site basis.
