Coalition wants to get rail on track

News article: Coalition wants to get rail on track

THE Coalition will invest $633 million to replace the ageing fleet of diesel hauled trains with faster long-haul variants of the successful V/Locity trains if elected.

There really is no valid reason why Andrews could not order the new trains now regardless of the track work on the North East.  96 new cars is a large order although not a real fan of the cheap vlocity trains. Smile

Would you put 5 sets on SG or more?

I would consider an additional 3 car set for SG working as a train you could run around western Victoria to gauge community support for the return of passenger services to Horsham and Hamilton.

Finally on my calculations the investment equates to $6m per car which sounds very high.

Though your suggestion has merit...community support in western Victoria cannot be 'gauged' as there are MANY aspects to the old stations that have to be complied with, such as was done at Stawell, Horsham and Nhill to make them DDA compliant. But Murtoa is still stuck in a 1990's time warp as is Dunkeld and Hamilton.

Do you think this is a real proposal from the Coalition?

Look at the Coalition's track record and the answer has to be NO.

Or...you could have written it like this.

Next on Coalition promises...return of The Vinelander and a study to return passenger trains to Mildura via Geelong and Ararat.

Answer - too expensive and no one will use it.

Isn't a return of The Vinelander and a return of passenger trains to Mildura the same thing Question

Moreover, the Coalition and their study, which will end likely up in the bottom drawer with their dusty study of 160 Km/h passenger trains from Bendigo to Maryborough via Castlemaine, won't be worth the paper it's written on.

Murtoa is currently being worked on and has been being worked on since the 12th of February until the 31st of July.

Below is quoted from a source;

"VicTrack are required to conduct refurbishment works to the old Murtoa station building and immediate surrounds."

"Prior to the works commencing, a temporary fence shall be installed along the platform outside the station and secured
to the existing canopy posts."

I like the idea of a rover velocity set on standard gauge.

Just because they are refurbishing it doesn't mean that they are bringing it up to modern standards - it could be a Victrack heritage project or the buildings may have become so dilapidated that they had to do remedial works.

The temp fence will be an OH&S requirement so the workers don't fall off the platform. If you saw the set up they had when they did the Maldon goods shed last year it would make you wince. They fenced off a whole area to create a compound for the contractors which VGR volunteers were not allowed to breach, site sheds etc etc.

Correction

Look at the Vic's bipartisan consensus to reopen the Mildura Pax service track record and the answer has to be NO.

Or they could do like at Creswick - build a minimalist facility opposite a heritage building which apparently was too far gone (but which the locals are renovating for community use).

Bit hard to do that at Murtoa though as there are several tracks opposite.

When I looked there a couple of years back, part of the station seemed to be in use - crewing areas perhaps?
