News article: Councillor calls for Lilydale and Belgrave line upgrade

A YARRA Ranges councillor has called for major changes to the Lilydale and Belgrave train lines, which are dubbed “the most unreliable” in Melbourne.

Surprise, surprise.

Councillor calls for Lilydale and Belgrave line upgrade

"Cr Clark said he wanted to see the track between Mooroolbark and Lilydale duplicated, and Lilydale train station – the end of the line – relocated to the opposite side of Maroondah Highway, removing the level crossing."

Train stabling?  Bus terminal?  Car parking?  Option of possible extension to Coldstream?

"He said most of the delays and problems along both lines stemmed from the fact they were single tracks, which needed to be resolved."

Well, you learn something every day.

"Cr Clark suggested a duplication of the tracks between Ferntree Gully and Upper Ferntree Gully."
“My proposal is to stop metro trains from Upper Ferntree Gully and run a three-carriage, driverless shuttle train to Belgrave,”

If you don't duplicate all the way to Belgrave, you don't solve that particular problem with a shuttle, driverless or otherwise.  Pax would not want to change trains at UFTG, and three cars would not cut it in peak hours anyway.

“It would free up the metro network, which is subject to trees on the line and slip problems whenever it rains.”

What does that mean?  Remove all lineside trees?  Stop it from raining?

If Cr Clark really wants to improve PT in the area, he should also consider more and better integrated buses from outlying areas such as Healesville and Warburton;  more car parking at Lilydale and Belgrave stations;  and extending the line to Coldstream.

And no line extension to Healesville which must be in the plan for 20 years or more.

Much as I would like to see an extension to Healesville (being a resident of Yarra Glen), it will probably never happen.  But to Coldstream is do-able.  In another thread, it discusses electrification to Stony Point, where there are said to be "three houses".  There are many more than that in Coldstream.

Isn't Stony Point where the ferry leaves for French Island (source of rail traffic)?

Always wondered why Coldstream did not have a rail service when you consider the housing that is going out in that direction.

yes (In theory) , though the Train and Ferry Never Meat. However There are plans for a passenger ferry terminal (one that takes car similar to Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry), That would boost the Train Patronage Significantly.

You ain't from around here, are you?

The vast majority of housing growth around Lilydale has been suburban infill development towards Chirnside Park and Mooroolbark, not towards Coldstream. The most obvious example of this is the development of the Cave Hill quarry land. Land sales for the first tranche of this (marketed as 'Kinley') are beginning shortly. 3000 homes - all of them on the opposite side of Lilydale from Coldstream.

Coldstream itself is constrained by being in a green wedge and virtually all of the housing is quite far away from the railway station. Much of the area surrounding Coldstream is also in a floodplain. It's not going to grow - unlike Lilydale proper. The only reason to spark to Coldstream is to put the Train Maintenance Facility there instead of in Lilydale where the land is more valuable. But first, fix the Lilydale line. Duplicate it, remove the level crossings and build a new station at Cave Hill Kinley. Then maybe think about a new train maintenance facility.

There's a primary school on the opposite side of Coldstream from the railway station, but that's not important right now.

We beg to differ on whether Coldstream would be a better place than Lilydale for those driving in and commuting from Healesville, Yarra Glen, Kinglake, Warburton etc.

  • Shorter drive, less fuel use.
  • Fares would be the same.
  • Relieves current parking congestion at Lilydale station.
  • Removes some traffic on highway between Coldstream and Lilydale.

Yes, as does Yering, Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek, Christmas Hills and Healesville.  The only school "jeffed" in the region was at Steels Creek, but that former school is now a thriving Community Centre.
