Question, how does PN rotate the 81 class through Portland/Victoria for maintenance?  I guess the first question is where is their maintenance done, and then second is if in NSW, how do they run the train schedules to get them back for maintneance?
james.au
Maintenance of the 81s is mainly carried out in Port Kembla, but also pass through Kooragang or Morandoo if required. They are transferred via MW2/WM2 then WB3/BW4 if they are going to Newcastle. How do they get to Melbourne I hear you ask, well that can happen one of two ways, either they are rostered to work a train back to either the Port of Geelong or the Port of Melbourne or they are collected by AM5 and the reverse is done to get them back up country.

If work is required that can not be done in N.S.W. ie they can't be transferred due to the problem may cause an impact to the network, it can be done at UGL, Spotswood.

I hope I haven't missed something.

PN grain train arrived 0440, should be 8109 and 8156 again from loading at Rainbow yesterday.

Too dark  now for photos before they start work and I'm not fit enough to walk up the big hill yet in daylight.

Unconfirmed reports that Friday's train loaded or partly loaded at Woomelang, if so that would make it the first train to Portland using the upgraded Maryborough line.  Usually I don't know where these trains come from unless someone else tells me, this one would be of interest if it really is a "first".

Unfortunately reports were wrong so still waiting for our first train on the new track.

8156 and 8109 arrived about 0310 with another PN grain.

Grain ship FEDERAL SKYE arriving next week to load about 31,500t of barley, will be loading from Berth 5 which is not a grain berth so will probably be using the portable loader again.

Another grain ship LO SHEN arriving later, is currently in Burnie (Tas).

This is the company with the portable grain loader which loads grain onto ships directly from their own trucks.

PN grain train arrived about 0345, think it's BL26 and G523, will check later.

Grain ship also arriving this morning but I think will be loading from trucks with the portable loader so no extra trains for this.

Speaking to a mate in Cavendish, earlier and he said trucks nose to tail, on the Henty Highway, lately, took 15 mins to cross the road to the pub and too hard to cross on the way home, so he's been there 4 days.

It seems their coming from further than Horsham, be interesting from where.

No grain ships showing up on any of the usual sites so no trains either.  Last year there were no grain trains in Portland from about middle of March to the end of July.

Before they make complete fools of themselves someone might want to tell them that while the Maroona > Portland line is under ARTC control and the MBRP project under Victorian control and never the twain shall meet it is highly unlikely that they would use the same contractors.

And with the way the MBRP work "close by" ie MBY to Ararat section has gone who would want them to!

The 19TAL is interesting though, I thought it was 21 but apparently not.

Due in about 1155 and out 35 minutes later.  Don't know which loco yet.  Will get photos.  Not always on time, can be half hour either side of advertised time.
