    Location: Melbourne, Australia
    No trains this morning Caulfield to South Yarra or similar due to track work.

    Why were there no trains this morning and buses had to be ordered then the track should have been back in service from first train this morning?

    What went wrong?

    MetroTrainsFrom 8.30pm Friday to last service Sunday and Monday to Wednesday, from 8.30pm each night Friday 31 August - Wednesday 5 September 2018 Affected lines: Cranbourne, Frankston, Pakenham

    Says the trains should have been up and running for the morning peak.

    Yeah...it's probably been around 6 WEEKS since the last storm in a teacup delay and/or track works post....so yet again...another reminder... Rolling Eyes

    Nope, this is works which I believe should have been completed last night but did not and as a result the track was not available for the morning peak causing a lot of issues for passengers.

    There is nothing in particular about this disruption that warrants a thread, works run overtime all the time, so I'm not sure why this warrants anything.

    Pit renewal at Hawksburn on the Caulfield Local tracks. I believe Vicsig has photos with the ballast wagons derailed so that probably delayed things.

    This morning the ballast was still being put down on the down track at 9:30. Not sure when the occupation completed.

    The line reopened around 4.30pm with minor delays to recover services on the Frankston Line.

    The cause was a ballast wagon derailing at Malvern which they spent Sunday rerailing which lead into Monday morning's chaos as the Cranbourne and Pakenham trains had to routed via through (Frankston) tracks while the local (Cranbourne / Pakenham) tracks works were running into overtime.

    This resulted with the Frankston line to have bus replacements shuttling passengers from Moorabbin to Brighton Beach and Moorabbin to Caulfield.

    Didn't reopen until 4.30pm, and closed again at 8:30pm for more scheduled works.


    This morning peak, they bussed Frankston pax to Sandringham line, and sent Dandenong trains down pl 1/2. By midday, Frankston was sharing with Dandenong. I guess they decided it was better to keep the replacement buses running longer, rather than squeeze 2 into 1 during peak?

    Easier to bus to Sandringham running at higher frequency, than the mess which would be squeezing more trains onto the dandenong pair in peak hour (which runs at a mighty 16tph)

    I somewhat disagree. The Dandenong line is running at a reduced frequency all week due to Cranbourne line trains not running. It would be much easier to cancel a few Frankston trains (e.g. the express services) than the logistical nightmare of organising a major bustitution with almost no notice. The Sandringham line is already overloaded with its own passengers, let alone everyone coming from Frankston.

    There have been unplanned cases in the past where only one track pair has been available South Yarra - Caulfield during peak hours and I have never seen the operator resort to closing an entire line.

    Digging out 40 odd tonnes of ballast by hand from underneath the thing might have *something* to do with it.
