2019 Predictions -

  don_dunstan Minister for Railways

Location: Adelaide proud
Thought I'd give us something to speculate on and look back at when 2020 comes around... my predictions:

  • RBA cuts rates to below 1% but the real estate crash in Syd/Melb continues unabated.
  • Labor wins federally in a May election with a thumping 25-seat majority but minor parties and independents also increase. The Senate looks even more chaotic. The Nationals leave the coalition. Not sure who can be opposition leader as it depends on who is left?
  • Shorten will have a very short honeymoon because of the deteriorating economy; won't be long before they're losing polls just like the Liberals and there's rumblings about his inept leadership (yes, it's going to happen all over again!)
  • Chris Bowen will announce a quantitative-easing style stimulus policy (if Frydenburg doesn't beat him to it).
  • Hard Brexit in Britain but the aftermath won't be nearly as bad as people are expecting. Theresa May dumped by her own party afterwards for failing to get a soft Brexit through.
  • The EU has to hand out more bail-outs to keep Italy, Greece and Spain in the union.
  • South Africa gets more like Zimbabwe
  • Trump reaches a trade deal with China but then withdraws later when the Chinese don't enforce the conditions.
  • Trump impeachment moves fail; Geroge Clooney and/or Oprah throw their hats in the ring for 2020.
  • China builds more massive gulags to hold all the enemies of the CCP (real and perceived)
and...

  • The Overland is cancelled mid-2019 due to a Victorian government budget emergency.
  • Sydney Metro trains rear-end each other after opening due to a software fault...
  • NT government gets a Commonwealth bail-out but its conditional on sacking half the public service.

Anyone else care to speculate!

Mine is a resolution. Whether it can be regarded as a prediction only time will tell.

My resolution is to post far less; nothing with luck, further on RP.

My avowed intention is to retire from RP.

You made it all the way through January 1 and deep into the afternoon on January 2 before posting.

That puts you half a day ahead of people who buy a gym membership and use it once!

Thanks Comrade.

I have had enough of both the industry generally and also RP for the foreseeable future.
I may lurk but that will be it.

By the way, did you know that scrap steel is now measured in Eiffel Towers?

Thanks for the sanity that you and a few others have brought to RP and Best Wishes to you all for 2019.

Don,

Dear Don,

Oh Don.

Considering some of your other predictions easily found in other threads, such as....
  • We'll all be living in grass yurts soon,
  • Morrison's first point of order will be to introduce another first homeowners grant to arrest the slide in property values,
  • We'll be off to the polls if the Libs lose Wentworth,
  • The Nats will have another leadership spill,
  • Trump won't meet with Morrison,
  • The boats will NOW start again,

….your predictions aren't worth a c..t full of cold water!

Hmm, I'm quite flattered that you bothered to trawl back through my posts to find all that. Flattered and uncaring.

For your info I'm still certain First Home-Owners grants will be back on the agenda before the election. And Labor have been trying to get a no-confidence motion up since the Libs lost Wentworth but it hasn't worked yet.

Here's a suggestion - why not grow a pair of gonads and swing your own predictions for the coming year out in the open just like I've done... unless you're too frightened of how people will perceive you if you're wrong?

I'll counter Don's predictions

- RBA leaves rates on hold for the year
- Housing prices in Syd and Mel drop another 5-10% during 2019, other states stablise or grow.
- CNN will continue to have Trump's latest failings on their website everyday
- Trump harps on about his wall
- Sydney Metro will start up, a few bugs to be removed, but otherwise very successful leaving people asking for more and govt expansion plans will follow.
- Sydney SE-LR will start up, finally to a hero's welcome but quickly be slammed for having insufficient capacity.
- Fed LNP will loose power, most of the senior LNP members will retire.
- Fed ALP will win and by the end of their term in govt will again be running a federal deficit
- The boats won't restart as even most of the brain dead in the ALP can see their previous policy was a disaster.
- ALP will cut negative gearing for existing properties and any drops in housing prices will be seen as a victory for the battler.
- NT will be bailed out by the feds, but no mass sackings
- Boy Kim in Nth Korea continues to play on again off again nuclear tests
- New Horizons continues to send pictures of Utima Thule
- Putin starts to loose popularity in Russia

EDIT:
Australian whole sale power prices do not drop despite more RE rolled out.

Awww, have a whinge.

Ok, just to humour you, I will make one prediction for 2019.

The majority of Don's predictions will be wrong.

I will also take this opportunity to make it clear that wrong predictions cannot be suddenly made to appear right just because you believe that the timing has changed or that you are allowed to twist your own words. If you make a prediction, bloody well stick to it in its original context.

Please do yourself a favour (if you can lower yourself to the point of not only actually reading other people's opinions but also taking them on board), and buy yourself a copy of Future Babble by Dan Gardner. And then, obviously, read it. It explains why pundits like yourself are normally wrong. Maybe, just maybe, you might then realise why your behaviour is often irksome.
