Anyone who thinks my post on the last page about NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is offensive in some way is welcome to report it to David Head and explain to him that it was sexist/racist or mean to ibises or whatever and David can decide on it.

And you have never - EVER - made a joke at the expense of someone's physical appearance? You don't do that sort of thing EVER because you have such high standards of morality that comparing someone to a bird is despicable and beyond the pale?
"don_dunstan"
Correct - I didn't. I had it done to me at primary school and fortunately had strong parents who taught me, among other things,  that it was wrong.
You are so ignorant that you think it's about comparing someone to a bird. It isn't. it's about insulting people's appearance, which idiots think is funny.
You have demonstrated that you can't deal with the truth, so you can call me a liar until the cows come home because you don't know any better, nor do you know what I have or haven't done. But we know exactly what you've done - it's there in writing.
Finally, I don't need to complain to anyone else; I'll keep calling you out for the low life that you are.

I still don't believe you have never, ever once secretly sniggered at a bad toupee, too much make-up or a leotard that barely covers the wearer. You come across as somewhat of a righteous prig, but I guess that's just who you are.

And I don't know how many times I've had to repeat this but politicians ARE FAIR GAME. And they always have been - go back and peruse some of the Punch Magazine political cartoons from the 19th century and politicians are depicted as pigs, monkeys and generally are derided as thieves and crooks. Did they cry, sue or say that it was beyond the pale? No, they sucked it up because they were in public office (generally).

Even more recently, did Julia Gillard burst into tears when she saw she was depicted as a big-nosed freak in political cartoons of the day? No, she laughed it off and got on with her job. If you're a public figure then derision about your person is part and parcel of being a public figure, isn't it?

You really sound like you'd be right at home in John Calvin's Geneva where they banned theatres, gambling, singing and dancing because it distracted from study of the bible. Only one way to think, my way. Laughter is the DEVIL'S WIND, you should be ashamed!

Don; what you believe is of supreme indifference to me because I have no respect for you or your ranting and raving. Try and grow out of your third grade sniggering in the gutter, and aim at a little maturity. That includes giving up your eternal habit of accusing people of something without a shred of evidence, and then abusing them for it. This is a forum for adults; not silly little boys. Try and adapt to it.

I really don't understand you, Valvegear. You have such a black-and-white all-or-nothing view of the world that it's really difficult to understand how you get through life without being outraged at everything and anything that you come across that transgresses your very narrow world view. And you are really punishing on anyone's point of view that is different to your own, you simply don't understand why people hold any sorts of views that are different to your own and find them repulsive and outrageous. How you get through the day without being revived by smelling salts every five minutes is beyond me.

Now in my book that's intolerant and narrow-minded but I'm sure you'll have some dismissive marginalising label that you want to apply to my dissent of your 'ultimate moral decider' status. But then again perhaps I should be grateful that you're here, the ultimate judge of moral values for this board and pope of what's good taste and what's not. Thank God you're here to decide what's right and wrong because obviously we can't decide that for ourselves!

And finally - it's a discussion board, not a bible meeting. We're allowed to rant about politicians and public figures here without fear of persecution by the authorities and believe me that's one thing about this country that I'm really grateful for... while we still have it.

Is this Dunstan just taking the piss? Surely someone is having a laugh here kicking back watching the reactions. No one could possibly be this stupid.

Alright, let me put it another way. What gives Valvegear the right to decide what's in good taste and what isn't? Who died and made him Pope?

You obviously got your tastes from your smeg and not that cookbook.

Yeah so you're guilty of exactly the same thing that Valvegear is: You think that your standards of what's tasteful is the final word and what isn't acceptable to you is wrong.

You are not a moral compass for society - neither is Valvegear. In fact it's really arrogant of both you to presume that you are the holders of what is righteous and correct.

People have different opinions and people express those opinions; it doesn't make them morally wrong if you find them offensive.

There’s a difference between right and wrong just as there is also a difference between being a civil, accepting member of society and being the opposite; a tone deaf, offensive fossil.

I’m afraid your pink shorts are no longer in fashion Don. Just like your sensibilities they belong to another era. One generations viewpoint is anothers cringe.

"don_dunstan"
Exactly. You just don't understand how anyone can have views that differ from yours and, if they do, they must be very difficult to live with. When you mature a little, you might get to understand the wide range of views - something you preach about but don't accept in others. I don't like some of your tastes and views, but that's not good enough for you. You have to say that I find "any sorts of views that are different to (my) own repulsive and outrageous". What absolute tripe. Some are; many are not.
P.S. Correct English is "different from your own". You may differ from something; you cannot differ to something.

This just shows how dumb Don is. I, and everyone else, have every right to decide upon our own standards of decency, behaviour and manners. We also have the right to dislike Don's standards or lack thereof which a number of us do.

No you don't - you really don't.

Let's go back to the original question which was your offense over my posting of a picture of Gladys Berejiklian, the NSW Premier, next to a "bin chicken". Do you really think that Gladys Berejiklian stays awake at night worrying that people have compared her to a bin chicken, something she got stuck with incidentally because she went on radio on her second day of being Premier and defended bin chickens (not because of her appearance)? Do you think it's going to ruin her life the fact that she's compared to a bin chicken?

No. It won't. She's NSW Premier, she didn't get to that role by collapsing into a gale of tears every time someone said something nasty about her - she's resilient and she has a thick skin which made her suitable for political office. If she saw that picture of her face next to a bin chicken she probably wouldn't give it a moment's thought.

But not you. You're outraged. You don't think that's the right way to speak about Gladys Berejiklian and you've decided that you're the person to defend her virtue, to rescue her on Railpage because after all, this has such a large exposure and God forbid that she should see that photo or she would surely swoon...

What a female politician DOESN'T need is people like Valvegear rushing to her defence and saying what they think she should be upset about and what she needs defending from. They don't need people like you to defend them because they're perfectly capable of doing that themselves, they're politicians after all.

I had no idea until recently that the humble ibis was considered a pest in Sydney - unflatteringly called a 'bin chicken' over there.

Apparently NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has also had the moniker 'Gladys Bin Chicken' applied to her too - although I can see a vague resemblance that might justify it...?

don_dunstan
1. The IBIS is a bigger issue in Brisbane where it is also called the garbage bin chicken

2. Yes, the physical connection trying to be made between The NSW Primer and the Ibis is not in the best taste.

I think Politicians (not their families) are mostly fair game, but there are some things that are best left alone and reference to physical appearance is one of them, especially female politicians. Focus on what they say, do or don't do, not how they look.

So again, you're another person deciding that she should be offended by that. It doesn't take into account the fact that she got name because she went on radio defending bin chickens on her second day of being Premier - and also her surname also sounds like "bin chicken". Well done on being yet another judge of what constitutes good taste, perhaps in the future I can be the arbiter of whether or not you're offended by something on your behalf?

We had ibises steal our lunch at Southbank years ago. I've also often heard them referred to as "dump birds" and "bin turkeys". Perhaps the ibises will be offended at their nicknames...

Don, in all of your customary waffle you have, as usual, digressed from the main point.

Let me put it very simply so that there's a possibility that you might understand it - you think it's funny to make remarks about somebody's physical features; I and others do not think so. You are entitled to your opinion; we are entitled to ours.

Nobody has suggested that Gladys or anyone else should feel offended, which is exactly where you went off the track and waffled on needlessly.

That's it!

I am annoyed the ibis is mocked and insulted by people as bin chicken etc, especially as one of Australia's famous early aviators, Bert Hinkler (1892-1933), built two gliders in 1911-12; the second design being based on his own observation and analysis, including photographs, of ibises in flight.

A small piece of wood, a relic from one Hinkler's hand-made gliders, was presented to the US astronaut Don Lind in early 1986 as a token of appreciation for his coming to Bundaberg to contribute to the Hinkler Memorial Lectures. Lind in turn gave it to Dick Scobee, the captain of the ill-fated final Challenger mission. Scobee took the wood with him on board the Challenger, inside a small plastic bag that he placed in his locker. After the explosion, the bag and the wood were recovered from the sea, identified, mounted, and later returned to the Hinkler Memorial Museum.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_Hinkler

Bought lunch from a food outlet, sat at table with said lunch, ibises landed on the table and took off with lunch. It happens everywhere all the time.
