Tottenham and storage Yard 2017

Really rams home the need for someone to scrape together a plan for this very large and very under-utilised piece of land.
potatoinmymouth

Bi directionally signal the broad gauge independent goods line, relocate the two standard gauge lines adjacent to it, reuse the rest of the land for massive apartment blocks. You could get a couple of suburbs of people in there, and its much better than dumping them out at a greenfields site between Rockbank and Melton.

ARTC and MM1 high vis jackets and utes a plenty today. I’m stumped as to what these two would be working on at Totty.
Lockie91
ARTC have been rearranging electrical connections to their track around the gauge splitting junction at West Footscray to move then away from the site of the third platform installation. Perhaps the workers you saw relate to that work.

It’s a possibility, however this was at Tottenham end of the yard not West Footscray. Besides the installation of safety fences, some minor earth works and one lonely foundation not much seems to be happening at West Footscray.

Now this is interesting. H1 has been dragged to South Dynon this morning behind BL32, and rumour has it the reason is to bring it back into service to remove dead wagons from Totty for scrapping (because the track condition doesn't permit anything heavier to access some roads). It's not clear why there's suddenly an urgency to clear Totty although there are continuing rumours of regauging (but let's face it, those rumours are decades old!)

I have read conflicting reports (surprise, surprise) that H1 is clearing the whole lot or just removing the old APEX rake. Will be interesting to see what is left when I go through on Monday!

*** edit - obviously this develpment and the works that have been continuing apace at the yard are related, it could be something as simple as the derelict vehicles are occupying roads that are slated for the same work as being done on other roads. OR could be something more complicated.

we can only hope that after years of nothingness waste of space, Tottenham is finally bulldozed and re-used for proper tracks for all the up-coming new generation work between Sunshine and SCS.

I'm not sure if this has been stated but at West Footscray, there is an new turnback being constructed for the Metro Tunnel Project. Hense why earthworks are happening at West Footscray.

Yes, has been discussed extensively both in this thread and others.

The delineation fencing recently erected further back towards the tower is interesting indeed. Temporary with star pickets and orange plastic netting but has gaps for egress more or less every 100m.

No action on clearing of wagons so far but certainly there is plenty of chat about it including among the heritage groups who may be in line to grab one or two items.

This morning, DIGL under occupation complete with lookouts (‘cos it’s so heavily trafficked normally!) and hand trolleys, hi-vis and head-scratching aplenty, more ponderous discussion taking place near the grain rake.

It’s all action, and I still couldn’t for the life of me tell you what’s going on.

There’s also a large quantity of new rail been deposited between the DG tracks on the up side of West Footscray all the way into the tunnel, but I assume that’s unrelated (those tracks have been looking increasingly precarious so maybe time for reconditioning).

Have the H class lost their extra hump weight at some point?
I'd have thought a normal T would have made more sense.

Do PN have a T class? The Hump (slow speed) controls might be handy for this work too?

Thanks DD, didn't see it on the list over at VicSig. Still poss that they want the slow speed control which the H has I reckon. We had Y164 up at Maldon for a while, it has it fitted and all agreed it was amazing for shunting, light years different to 133. Of course the extra horses helped too!

I figured since they wouldn't use a G or BL because of the track condition.
According to victorianrailways.net the axle load of the H is closer to the heavier locos.

And 8 road is gone! Rails removed, jewellery piled up, sleepers still in situ for now.
  potatoinmymouth Chief Commissioner

Have word that 8 road has been formally abolished, by the way, as opposed to being rebuilt like its West Yard counterpart. Definitely Metro Tunnel related.

Based on the West Footscray works notification (found here Works) this is the first of two sidings to go. The work closer to Tottenham may relate to drainage

So more resleepering work is being done on 7 road this morning, which has, at last, given me a theory about what the end game is.

I will guess they are currently preparing 7 road to become the new DIGL. Once it is operating as a through line, they’ll remove the old DIGL, giving two tracks worth of space in the precinct for turnback stabling.

I could be completely wrong but it’s the first time I’ve been able to put the pieces together so alternative ideas/actual knowledge are welcome!

I noticed on a train from Southern Cross to North Melbourne this morning, on the left hand side (near Costco etc), the previous rail lines have all been ripped up. From memory it may have been stabling/storage facilities?

Is this anything to do with the redevelopment of E-Gate or is it rail related?

Sorry didn't want to start another thread!
  potatoinmymouth Chief Commissioner

Absolute action stations this morning - B75 and S317 delivering a fresh load of rail from Spotswood, B80 collecting the grain rake. When was the last time three locos were simultaneously shunting at Totty?

Very reliable sources told me today that Tottenham yard is being transformed to store Velocities. PN has H1 ready to remove the wagons stored there to North Dynon for scrapping soon. Not sure where PN and Qube are going to store their excess broad gauge wagons from now on.

edit: Th H is being used as VicTrack won't allow a G in there due to the higher axle load and crappy track.
