V/Line will soon have more drivers than ever before thanks to a 20 per cent increase in drivers by the end of next year, helping deliver more reliable services across the entire regional network.

I personally know of 3 Driver's from my depot alone that have left for V/Line in the last few months, so I'd wager the answer is yes.

I'm advised Trainee Drivers also spend a considerable time in a classroom environment so I'm certain they all get trained up ok.

Location: At the back of the train, quitely doing exactly what you'd expect.
I noticed some trainees being shadowed on the network a while back - both drivers and conductors so that would suggested they do spend a fairly decent amount of time in the field before graduation.

Trainees spend the vast majority of their time in the field learning the different routes and train handling skills, which is why the amount of trainers vs trainees is a bit of an issue. Theory work is conducted in the class room which differs in time depending on where the trainee has come from (off the street or conversion driver).
