Nothing new there... laser profiling wheels and car condition monitoring systems are already available and in use. Granted they may not be utilized by all the operators, but that's their choice.

Unit trains generally get a roll by inspection prior to departure and that's it for 1-4 weeks, depending on operator and location, before their next scheduled inspection.
