Strowger  system, one of the first automatic systems available , I worked at City North exchange Sydney  as a technician for many years & would have adjusted thousands of these switches  , The video is at slow motion  to show what happens with each impulse from the dial of the phone . A very noisy place to work during the day  with all the offices in the city  using phones day long  , imagine a machine gun in close quarters with the noise level .

I'll second WW's description of the noise level. When with PMG/Telecom these were the noise in the background or not heard at all. My interests lay in transmission so I escaped having to adjust these types of equipment.

WW, was City North a different place to York or just a different name?

City Nth  was down a lane off Castlereagh St between Hunter & Hoskins place , York was on the gnd floor of the Grace building on York St when it was  the Comm. Repat . section  ,City South  was also in Castlereagh st  beside Fire headquarters  , Dalley  was obviously in Dalley St  between George & Pitt . There was also Central which was in the basement of the GPO  & a small  exchange in the Commonwealth block in Chifley square .Haymarket is down in Parker st  Haymarket  .

Nth , Sth , York , Central & Chifley are all gone now being replaced by exchanges with heaps more exchange access but in smaller size buildings  for their requirements .

Gee I may have just broken the official secrets act letting all of this out  for general consumption .

Thanks and OK Wally. I never was sure about City Nth.

I went to York a several times in the early and mid 70s when I was in Trans Meas for testing junction cables to various places in the city and near-city. I remembered it being the Grace building as I missed out going on its roof in 1979 to recover the receiver site for the original mobile phone system which had been replaced by a site on the roof of Telecom House. Also went to Pitt, City Sth and Haymarket a couple of times each too while in Trans Meas.
