I recall some talk a few years ago about this being rolled out in Melbourne and nothing since.  Having been to Sri Lanka I can see how this would be useful and the Mobile Data Network is poor when you leave the main centres like Colombo and Candy.

Virtually the entire Melbourne CBD including the five stations (possibly Jolimont and Richmond too given their proximity to the sports precinct) is now covered by the excellent VicFreeWifi network.

It might have been an advantage to note the railway stations are in Sri Lanka, so we didn't have to bother reading the thread...Rolling Eyes

...and doesn't Candy start with a 'K' Question

There is something about many developing and emerging nations including the former Eastern Bloc countries need credit for. They more often than not not just have Free WIFI, but if hassle free Free WIFI.

Take Estonia at Xmas time, shops and cafes free WIFI, no password/codes, no F'n around it just works and works fast. We down loaded a number of movies in HD simply having a drink for 20-25min. Airports, no issue, just works. Every where you go, its there. Kiev Ukraine, 2013, the whole CBD was smothered in free WIFI.

Go to too many developing countries, worst of them all Germany.
- Need to buy something to get the code
- Its speed is slow
- Need to "login"
- Need to use a phone number, worse of all for some countries a local number
- Limited access time, speed and data

UK trains however my wife gives bonus points to. Its amazing how fast you can down load something when the train is at the station and you are standing on the platform waiting for another train. The WIFI on the trains allows streaming of movies.

India Calcutta airport, quadruple thumbs down unless you go to the Irish bar.

India Cochin Airport, 10-15sec to down load a 90min movie, and I wasn't even on the wifi, I mistakenly did it via the 4G network. But that's ok, you get 2GB/day of data for $25/mth!!!
