Old Trafford lives up to its reputation - rain!
There's an old saying that if you look out of the Old Trafford dressing room window and can see the Lancashire Hills, it's going to rain, and if you can't see the hills, it's already raining.
Honours about even at the close of play; Australia 3/170 - we'd have liked one less wicket; England would have liked one more.
As for Warner - time to either have a spell or move down the order. Broad has got inside Warner's head and messed him up completely. He now doesn't know whether to play the ball or leave it.

I'd keep him in the side and move him down the order. He's the perfect player to take advantage of the pie chuckers who come on once Broad's opening spell is done.

I seem to recall someone saying earlier this year Warner should be at #3
.In fairness to Warner, the method Broad is using has worked on all the Aussie left handers. And it worked a treat when Flintoff used it on Adam Gilchrist in 2005.
This test will decide the ashes.
As with 2005, the Oval test will probably be a draw. We right on the equinox, and the days are getting so short so fast there just won't be enough time for Australia to bowl England out twice on a likely flat pitch. But the batters selected for the oval will get a chance to fill their boots and save/secure their places.
M Hayden also had a poor record in England, not unlike Warner's. But he made a big hundred in his last game there at the Oval (flat pitch) in game drawn because of too time lost due to poor light.
On the plus side of things, at least no-one is calling for N Lyon to be dropped for bowling a thigh high full toss

Best of all, the pressure has England coming apart at the seamers. Jofra Archer has been reduced to a pace that even New Zealanders wouldn't call fast, and Ben Stokes just pulled up lame and went off midway through his over.

Smith's Revenge! A double century will teach them not to give him a clip behind the ear! At 497/8 and the Poms 23/1, Australia is looking comfortable. The only black spot was Wade's suicidal heave at Leach when it obvious to anyone that his job was to stay with Smith. Paine and Starc each got useful runs.

Steve Smith has come to the rescue yet again, and pulled the Aussies to almost an unbeatable position!! they declared on 6/186, leaving England 388 to get to win the match, England lost 2 early wickets to be 2/18 at Stumps, tonight could well be the night where we reclaim the Ashes!! in regards to Warner, yes I think he does need to go away a bit and have a think, but I just don't know whether they will do it for The Oval test. Joe Root is also struggling mind you, he got dismissed for a duck off just 1 ball last night, he has had a duck 3 times in this series, the most ever for an Englishman in an Ashes series.

Watching 9's coverage last night, when England were sent in to bat. Ricky Ponting made comment that there was a picture of the Aussie brains trust, except Warner was in the shot. Laughter from other commentators, poms.

I personally think Tim paine did a fabulous job as captain especially in the final session over night. He is a great captain and we need to ensure he stays there.

Warner is struggling.His second-innings dismissal was just pitiful to watch. He literally jumped backwards - he was airborne just before the ball arrived, and it was a length delivery (it had to be to get him lbw). It wasn't as though he'd been surprised by a sudden chest-high lifter. That is no way to play, and it's a measure of just how badly Warner has been mentally beaten up by Broad. Full marks to Broad; he has single handedly nullified a potential threat.

A massive effort by the Australians, first time since 2001 that they have won the Ashes on English soil, Tim Paine sure did bounce back in a big way from Leeds, his captaincy was 100% better in my book, to bring on Labuschagne and have him dismiss Leach was a cracker move!! the DRS Reviews were also way better from him, now it's off to The Oval on Thursday, here's hoping the Aussies can make it 2-1.

Not a bad idea at all, and it just might have worked. It's been done before the days of 20/20. In the fifth Test, Australia vs West Indies in Melbourne in 1961, Richie Benaud gave Bob Simpson instructions to take Wes Hall apart. Simpson hit 18 off Hall's opening over, and 31 in total off the first three, causing Worrell to take Hall out of the attack. . . exactly what Benaud wanted.
There's always room for an unconventional thought in captaincy. If it comes off, the skipper can then ponder the words of the economist Maynard Keynes, "Unconventional success provokes more suspicion than orthodox failure."

"England had many chances to retain the Urn, but they couldn't manufacture ways in which to bring it about, the Aussies were 8-122 at Edgbaston in the first test, a perfect opportunity for the English to have clambered all over the Australian's, but Steve Smith came to the party, and has done so on many occasions this series, then there was Steve Smith caught off a no ball on 118 in the 4th Test, by a slow off spinner none the less (that could have been the turning point of the match right there), he went onto make a double hundred after that, and the rest is history, I will say that Jofra Archer has been a real positive find for the England side, his pace is quite incredible, and whether we like it or not, Ben Stokes has proved what sort of a heart he has when it comes to the fight, now it's off to The Oval on Thursday, let's see what happens."

Since the end of the fourth Test, it has been announced that former England captain Andrew Strauss (leader of two victorious Ashes campaigns) is to be knighted.
Joe Root, on the other hand, probably needs to win this week's Test to avoid a one way trip to the Tower of London.
It didn't take long for even a weak batting side like Australia to work out his game and start to make adjustments, and you can bet South Africa and Sri Lanka (England's next opponents) will have been keeping a close eye on him. On those upcoming tours he'll also have the challenge of adjusting his technique to suit the Kookaburra red ball (he'll go for ODI style run rates if he bowls like it's a Duke) and less helpful pitches.
Overseas tours can be the making of a great player, but also the breaking.

… I will say that Jofra Archer has been a real positive find for the England side, his pace is quite incredible, …I think there's a not insignificant chance that Archer will turn out to be a one hit wonder.
