    Oh lord. I hope this is not a serious idea for MARL. Even the feds seem to pushing for a dedicated tunnel into SCS. A cheap option will suffer the network for generations to come. Preventing fully segregated interurban and regional services.

    Not to mention they will go down as the government not remembered for the excellent infrastructure roll out. But as the government the stuffed MARL to save a few bucks.

    Doubt it will happen. As the article said they have to look at all options.Cheapest, most expensive, most practical, fastest,etc. once they have scenarios then they can crack on and do their trade/ cost/benefit studies. With 10Bn in the bank, they could afford to tunnel the whole way!!

    I think the SCS to Sunshine section will be a combination of tunnel, ground level, and Skyrail TM.

    I read the article the full-way, not the misleading title.

    It's basically this but for the airport rail link:

    It's like saying oh the Metro Tunnel would have been a dedicated metro btw Highpoint and Domain. That never happened, but they did some quick analysis over each option.

    Why would the Metro tunnel be extended to the Airport? It's a metro tunnel, needed to provide more paths into the city for western suburban passengers.

    The airport tunnel would be used by express trains including VLine trains. Two very different stopping patterns and outcomes.

    Why are we even considering the need to tunnel from Sunshine all the way to the CBD when we can Skyrail most of it far cheaper? Maybe tunnel under Footscray but that'd be all.

    Clearly this is a senior public servant thought bubble. A public servant who hasn't a clue about the traffic on the express V/Line tracks to/from Sunshine and the plans to increase the traffic along this section

    I await with bated breath for a slap down from Minister for Transport Infrastructure and the popping of this ill-informed thought bubble.

    I doubt it would be a full tunnel from Southern Cross to Sunshine. As you say, the pinch point is Footscray. I could see the Sunbury lines between North Melbourne and South Kensington being handed over to Airport Rail once those trains move into the Metro tunnel, then a combination of a bridge over the river and a descent under Footscray, coming back up at West Footscray being an option.

    And yes there is more space available at Sunshine to undertake this work than trying to shoehorn it into Footscray .

    Wow, if you think that between $3 to $8 Billion is "a few bucks". Flipping heck. If they can save billions on other options then I am all for it. I think there are more pressing issues than an airport train.

    True. But spending $3 billion for something which is slower than the SkyBus is not likely to generate a lot of custom.

    NEIC, massive investment over the coming decade in services and industry.

    Greenfields area, no matter how you cut it there is going to be some interesting track configuration at Sunshine. Looking at two additional platform pairs possibly underground.
    -MARL will need it own platforms
    -Platforms 3 & 4 will service the WRP
    -Additional Platforms for regional services?
    It’s going to be complicated try to shoehorn this into Footscray, not to mention the price.

    Even distribution of passengers across the network. A problem that stations like Flinders Street and South Yarra currently have. Post MM1 Footscray will become a major interchange for MM1 services in addition to the ever increasing demand thanks to the many apartments popping up.

    Sunshine becomes your major regional interchange away from the inner core.

    Emailed them while back and they said 'dual gauge' solution when I asked about the gauge. The State Government seems to want it ultimately, integrated with Vline and the suburban rail loop
