Went past there a few weeks ago and it was looking very sad, no obvious work going on and the yards all empty. Seems to me like it could be ripe for a Costco ... maybe the VIC government is thinking the same thing.

I drove past there less than a week ago and counted at least 4 cars on site and I wasn't trying.

They have been busy of late with a refurbishment program of the already in service XTraps. Since the start of August there had been six 3 car sets in plastic wrap in Northern yard waiting to be put together. There are now four 3 car sets in the yard. I don't know if these are the last lot of the most recent order, given what is going on I would say they are. Quite often you will see at least two 3 car sets in Southern yard, also a P & T from SSR stays in yards too.  It depends on what they are up to when you pass as to how busy or quiet they are/look.

Ripe for Costco, what an insult to the intellegence of Australians, I say build a mosque with markets and textiles from the middle east , Africa and Indonesia  for all the non consumption humans. Not Don Dustbin terrorist's!

If we can get the SG into Ballarat East quicker then they would have more market to address with both gauges.  The government is not going to let Alstom fail.

I haven't seen the lack of SG be a problem for Bendigo, heck they've even done some NG work.

At the end of the day, a couple of orders for a few Xtraps won't keep the place alive.
Alstom has to actually want to hunt down some work themselves.

I doubt they will go. @bevans is right, the government will prop them up with a few more Xtraps.

The government is due to place an order next year for the new suburban fleet. Xtrap 2.0? We are not going to have HCMTS running everywhere.

Also the SRL looks very similar to the Sydney Metro, it is also possible that the Alstom Metropolis might be the train of choice here in Victoria.

With SG being available you can turn to wagon maintenance and loco maintenance on SG which they cannot right now.  Bendigo North I am certain would love both gauges.
