And for all the whinging by the newspapers, even they state, buried in the article, of course, that the cost overrun only amounts to $200 million yet with banner headlines saying billions. They like their cake and eating it too.

It was a useful way to gauge the quality of the various Victorian news outlets today though. It seems The Age / Nine pushed the whole "oh no, massive cost overruns, this government can't get anything right" the hardest - not surprising, as it was them that the consortium contacted to get their story out - while the other commercial news reports and the ABC managed to point out it was a cash grab by the consortium (one I think even had a quote from the construction union calling out the stoppage as blackmail)

State press gallery has been told the TBMs will start again today. No word on what ransom was extracted.

There's a concern that the TBMs have 'sunk' a little under their own weight since they were shutdown a few days ago....

So that could explain why they are supposed to be working 24 hours; hadn't considered that.
That would be interest if the stoppage causes a "bump" in the tunnels! Laughing

Hmmmm, a $3 billion cost blowout might be conservative...

Stuff this commercial in confidence crap, we need to see this contract now.

Seems like they consortium didn’t get the reaction they wanted out of the media so they went and leaked to the opposition.

What experience does David Davis have on building infrastructure. It’s not hard to deliver on budget when you’ve spent $0 on infrastructure in 4 years. Twat.

They AG like they always do will go through the books once they project is wrapped up. By then the government won’t give two bits if it over budget. They can point to the happy thousands using it everyday, who also don’t care as they are ridding a shiny new train to work.

Interesting that they are apparently installing the stanchions now, at least 5 years before they'll see use.

Much easier and cheaper to put them in now rather than having to lift them over or bring them in under the other lines later.

I created a short video explaining the Metro Tunnel in an informative manner.

Nope.

Waaaay back before the project was public knowledge, an early plan was for the eastern portal to be at Caulfield rather than South Yarra.  They eventually decided the extra few kms of tunnelling couldn't be justified economically, so they changed plans to be express from Caulfield into the tunnel.

The Eddington plan called for the Metro tunnel to start at Caulfield, but due to cost as you've alluded to above, the portal was moved closer in to South Yarra. However this cost cutting could yet bite the government on the smeg.

I've heard that the way the tunnels are being designed to the south of Domain/Anzac will allow a junction to be included later, in a similar fashion to the way the Kennington Loop is being modified in London (though a little easier due to design).

But that's just whispers, so please take with a grain of salt.

The leaked PTV plan seems to include some form of extra capacity, but whether that takes the shape of extending the tunnel, or say providing a different tunnel for other services, who knows.

Metro web site has given us rough dates for the two western TBMs should break thru; i.e. mid Feb and mid March. The linked .pdf provides a lot more information about how its going to be done including the fact that they expect it to take a month to do each retrieval an that is largely just the cutter head as the 'gantry' will be drawn back through the completed tunnel, not lifted out as the head has to be.

Apparently the new "North Melbourne" station on the metro won't be called that. Too much confusion for emergency services etc.

The current "North Melbourne" station will not be renamed.

Do you have a source on that information?

The current North Melbourne Station in East Melbourne is equally confusing. At least the new station is in North Melbourne proper.

My understanding is that emergency services were not so much the issue as the thousands of signalling assets coded NME. That would mean either a weird and frustrating mismatch between the passengers’ North Melbourne and the railway workers’ NME or a near-impossible recoding project.
