That match should be resumed once the air is clear enough, or Jakupovic awarded a wildcard to the main tournament.

Just because your a professional athlete you shouldn't be forced to put your health at risk, nearly every year we also have the issue regarding heat at the court surface and even for the spectators. Remember the ongoing BS in the past about should the roof even be closed if it gets too hot? The whole thing should be moved to undercover and / or night only if the dates cannot be changed.

The previous ban on closing the roof just for heat was there for good reason - the original ventilation systems at Rod Laver Arena were so poor that closing the roof would have made things worse rather than better.

Instead of building more fully enclosed stadiums, Melbourne Park should have the two permanent Show Court venues fitted out like centre court at War Memorial Drive in Adelaide with a roof that is open at the sides to allow natural movement of fresh air.

Some reforms to the event format could help too - maybe have three set matches in the early rounds and only go to five set matches once it gets to the finals and there's more room on the schedule to have all matches scheduled on the three stadium venues.

But that's all stuff to talk about afterwards - the immediate tasks are to sort out the question of sporting integrity from today's matches in the qualifying tournament (retract the wildcard intended for unrepentant doper Maria Sharapova and use it to admit Jakupovic to the main tournament) and work out a plan for how to deal with any further disruption due to dangerous air quality.

For the Australian open, tournament organisers should consider flying some of the early round players and officials to Sydney just to get out of the smog.

At least Sharapova will have finally moved on from holering to wheezing.

Sook and moan about air quality in Melbourne. Gimme a break. About time city folk got dished up a damn good dose of perspective.

Sydney and Canberra have had it for over a month, it come to Melbourne and the tissues come out and it’s all over the news like it’s an outrage. FFS!!

Oh look, food bowl price on the rise ????. Who would have seen that?

Did you not see the news when Sydney was all covered in smoke, that was all over the news too!
And nobody cares about Canberra.

That being said  people are overreacting to the smoke, acting like this s*it will kill em despite not having any lung illnesses. It seriously isn't that bad.

That is correct my friend.

However, if one was to be glued to the morning sunrise program on 7 and whatever the copy is on 9, their incessant 24hr buzz feed which has turned into a self licking ice cream would have you believe that when we show you the smoke in Melbourne, you’ve brain dumped what’s happened elsewhere. When they show you the next story, you’ve brain dumped the previous one.

Hence they try and capture you in their cycle, which on those shows repeats every 10minutes or so.

Just turn the TV off and go do something else.
Their constant repetition is enough to make your brain hurt.

As the saying goes, every unprecedented drought is broken by unprecedented rains and VV.

Dorothea Mackellar wrote her famous poem about this 110 years ago, when she was 19 years old. Strangely in her short life and with the country barely 100 years old, she seems to have an uncanny prediction of a weather pattern now labeled "Climate Change", surely it could not be experience from the time in the late 19th century when we didn't have extreme weather events!

The love of field and coppice
Of green and shaded lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins.
Strong love of grey-blue distance,
Brown streams and soft, dim skies
I know, but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

The stark white ring-barked forests,
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon,
Green tangle of the brushes
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops,
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When, sick at heart, around us
We see the cattle die
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine
She pays us back threefold.
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze ...

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand
though Earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly

Brilliant! . . . that's a new one! What in the name of Mazeppa is a self-licking ice cream?

Big heavy rains in Melbourne, so now the city folk will have fresh air, and clean memories and be confused about what all this lingering fuss about bushfires is all about.

So the cycle continues.

A friend reposted a FB post from this time around 9 years ago. Flooding rains will end the record breaking drought!
I don't think flooding rains are on the forecast, but anyway.., I think someone from here may have said every 9 years something tends to happen...

...and here's the flooding rains, Dorothea Mackellar's poem isn't a work of fiction!

The linked story has been updated to suggest that the rainfall is not as severe as first thought.

I guess in the old days it might have been, but not now.

Interesting to note that due to fire debris etc. the rain might not even soak into the ground.

In Victoria, there are concerns about possible mudslides in the next week or so if torrential rains do eventuate in East Gippsland.

Tipping point has come and gone, unfortunately.

So in other words there is nothing more we can do to control the climate?
No more glueing of hands on roads then.
Welcome to the world of the realist.  The climate changes but we can do xxxx all about it.

Some good news re the Blue Mountains line.

Limited diesel services resume from Tuesday 21st January.

Essentially, the Dubbo XPT will run 6 days a week, one of the two Bathurst Bullet trains comes back, and the Broken Hill train returns as well.

There will be modified timetables in place though.

All this is explained on the Transport for NSW news page.

NSW TRains staff received a slightly different version with the mentioned passenger services commencing on Monday and some freight services on Tuesday.

There will be some form of scratch signalling in place.

Bushfire Update: The Gosper Mountain fire has gone from the Fires near me app. Fires in Springwood have been diminished to 4 ha. And the Voyager Point fire now gone as well. With more fires expected to go later today up in the north coast.

This is due to a thunderstorm in the area, giving heavy rain. The rain should linger on the east coast until 3pm today. With rain going on for almost 24 hours. But Lighting may cause new fires.

It seems like that Part 2 of the 2019-2020 bushfire season is over.

Many fire areas got relatively little rain and not enough to kill the fires. After a few days of benign weather, several fires went to emergency level yesterday.
A large tree hit by lightning or log on the perimeter of a fire can smoulder for days even with rain. You only need a hot windy day and it's on again. There's a lot of bush left and months to go.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the dirty rain that hit Melbourne on Wednesday night. That was because of the dust storms in Mildura.
Not really severe but it did give much of the ground this odd brown colour.

Happened in other parts of Victoria in December.

Not uncommon nowadays it appears.
