GWNs on the move

    G&Ws narrow gauge GT42CU-ACe GWNs are on the move. GWN001 reported passing eastwards through Charleville today on a low-loader.

    G&W is currently establishing its first Queensland toehold in Mackay and Sarina.

    They are presently in use on the Whyalla iron ore trains so they are far from idle. Perhaps there is more money in coal than iron ore. The ex QR, ex South Africa 2250s are expected to replace them at Whyalla with 2275 already out and about on the Whyalla iron ore trains.

    GWN001 has returned to its birthplace at Downer Maryborough, arriving there today by road. With Progress Redbank handling most GT42CU-ACe repairs and overhauls in Queensland these days, the delivery to Downer is somewhat out of the ordinary.

    This will make things more interesting on the Whyalla network, with lesser power locos taking over from the GWN’s, unless wagon consists are reduced then we could see regular triple-headed trains.

    I have heard that GWA may be taking over the infrastructure depot at Yukan (5 KM west of Jilalan ) where there is several short roads and a couple of sheds where track machines and the undercutter are serviced and repaired.
    Wagon storage may be in Jilalan yard where there is multi user access available.

    Well, that'll be interesting, and right next to the Bruce Highway, so it should be pretty easy to see them moving in. Went past there on Sunday and Aurizon's maintenance crews still appeared to be in residence at this stage.

    The 4th GWN will leave Whyalla by road this Sunday 23/2 lunchtime (and the fourth 2250 will arrive that morning).

    The first three 2250s delivered to Whyallla, ie 2275, 2250 and 2260 were newly painted in standard GWA livery. Logic suggests that the fourth 2250 was well down the refurbishment track before One Rail was unveiled and therefore it is likely to be in the same GWA colours but perhaps with One Rail logos?

    Yep - as mentioned in the One Rail thread there is no new One Rail livery and locos will retain the the orange and black. It will be a few weeks before the first loco (not necessarily at Whyalla) is re-badged.

    Went past Yukan yesterday, seems no change at this stage.

    I was wondering if this could happen as what would Aurizon do for the infrastructure depot that operates there already? They are located here at a convenient spot. easily accessible from the Bruce Highway for materials and people from Mackay and Sarina.

    Also a convenient spot in case something goes wrong closer to the ports, which is critical to keep moving.

    So I imagine if this does transpires as an idea, then Aurizon will ask for a pretty penny to replace this depot and it may not stack up commercially for GWA or 1Rail.

    Or maybe they will set something up new adjoining the infrastructure depot.

    The fifth GWN002 has finished working at Whyalla and may also be up there now or at least on its way.
