News article: RFQ released for concept design of passenger terminal in Katherine, NT

The Northern Territory government has released a request for quotation for the development of a concept design for a rail passenger terminal as part of the Katherine Logistics and Agribusiness Hub.

The NT Government is planning to upgrade the Katherine Terminal with plans for a new railway station and expansion of the rail freight terminal.

The Katherine Logistics and Agribusiness Hub will be located next to the current Katherine Railway Terminal, and with the projected increase in freight, the passenger terminal will need to be moved to a separate rail loop to the northern side of the rail line.
news

The new terminal will be moved to the north of the current location freeing up space for more freight sidings and terminal space.

Currently, passenger rail services to Katherine are provided by The Ghan, which stop twice a week. The tender documents indicate that this may increase to three times a week in future. Passenger trains use the same rail loop as freight services on the line and passenger trains extend into the freight operations area, necessitating the need for a new terminal and loop solely for passenger trains.
news

The Ghan timetable might we see a change with an additional service?

Freight on rail should have made a much bigger impact than it has on the north south corridor.  Is GWA really the right company to be running this line or should the infrastucture be purchased by the commonwealth via ARTC and opened to all operators.

Seems like there might be an opportunity for The Ghan and potentially other services to take a share of the Cruise passenger market post Covid.

There is arguably some potential but is there scope for a passenger service running just between Darwin and Katherine stopping at any intermediate stations?

Are we at that stage yet when it comes to the territory?

I am wondering what the NG line offered in the way of passenger trains if any when it existed?

There wouldn't be any business case for that.

The current Greyhound bus service (Alice Springs to Darwin) only runs three times a week (GX880 - Tue, Thu, Sat) and stops at:

PNC PINE CREEK 1:55 PM Lazy Lizzard, 299 Millar St, Pine Creek Nt
HCK HAYES CREEK 2:35 PM Roadhouse
ADR ADELAIDE RIVER Arr 3:10 PM Bp Roadhouse, Stuart Highway Nt
ADR ADELAIDE RIVER Dep 3:35 PM Bp Roadhouse, Stuart Highway Nt
PLM PALMERSTON 4:50 PM Bus Interchange, Palmerston Nt
BMH BERRIMAH 5:05 PM N: Shell Truck City, Berrimah Nt
DRW DARWIN 5:20 PM Darwin Bus Interchange, Bay A, Harry Chan Ave, Darwin Nt

and the Broome to Darwin the same, three times a week (GX680 - Tue, Wed, Fri):

PNC PINE CREEK 6:55 AM Lazy Lizzard, 299 Millar St, Pine Creek Nt
HCK HAYES CREEK 7:35 AM Roadhouse
ADR ADELAIDE RIVER 8:10 AM Bp Roadhouse, Stuart Highway Nt
PLM PALMERSTON 9:20 AM Bus Interchange, Palmerston Nt
DRW DARWIN 9:40 AM Darwin Bus Interchange, Bay A, Harry Chan Ave, Darwin Nt

That's only six services a week each way, and the local passenger numbers using these services between Katherine and Darwin might make up half the numbers if that.

The terminal in Katherine isn't anywhere near the town centre ~7.5 km away, and the one in Darwin has the same issue being located at East Arm ~ 17.5 km's.

The bus service would infinitely cheaper to operate and much more accessible for passengers.
