Looks like Dan blaming his Victorian electorate for complacency rather than his own decision not to use the ADF or police to enforce quarantine, will put him further out of favour with them. Where is the opposition?
Last answer first - the Opposition is sniping from the sidelines and copping huge criticism for it. O'Brien's original whinge was that restrictions continued for too long; his next was that the restrictions were lifted too early. He's the ALP's unpaid campaign manager and doing a great job of it.
Next; the decision to use security was wrong. We already know that; it is well documented and part of history, but it is not the sole cause of the latest wave of infections. Andrews is perfectly correct. People have been complacent. Go for a half hour walk from my place and you will see countless examples of social distancing rules being broken, and not many masks until today. Social gatherings are being held by people who just don't care.
Then there are the other idiots - rule 1: when you have been tested, STAY HOME until you have the result. But no; a couple of stupid morons had tests, flouted the rules, and drove all the way to East Gippsland before they had results. They managed to infect people in Orbost and Marlo to name just two places; there may be more. Both places were Covid-free before Typhoid Mary and her drongo boy friend decided to foul it up. This week, another dill surfaced. He tried to drive from Melbourne's north western suburb of East Keilor right through town and down the Mornington Peninsula to go fishing. Another came from north of the city and attempted to go to Torquay so he could do some surfing. All were from within the proscribed area, and going outside it. There are other horrible examples.
For once, I found myself agreeing with Neil Mitchell earlier this week when he wrote that, " . . . there is no Plan B. You must abide scrupulously by Plan A, or we could be in for a major catastrophe."
We have the dreadful combination of Ignorance, complacency, "it won't happen to me", "let's see if we can get away with a party/barbecue/street drag races/ (tick one)", and other forms of sheer bloody minded deliberate disobedience. Now a few civil libertarians have come out of their burrows saying that the compulsory wearing of masks in public is an affront to their liberty, is unconstitutional and so on. I hope they remember it when they're in an intensive care ward.
