Resurrecting the Eaglehawk - Inglewood line New

  Lockspike Deputy Commissioner

This really does bring into light the critical need to convert regional Victoria to SG ASAP before the few existing but already "past their use by date" BG locos and rolling stock become scrap metal.

No need to worry about any more conversions or upgrades, the 'road transport industry' will gladly accept the challenge.

If the work is there, what is stopping the operators procuring new(er) wagons or gauge converting newer locomotives? Does the obscurity of the broad gauge truly increase the cost that much?

Rolling stock can be ordered for BG and converted later.

Approach Freight Victoria and ask for a subsidy to assist with the conversion later.  rail needs to get the produce to port and other places and if this translates to much needed investment in the rail network then that is what the government should be doing.

'Does the obscurity of the broad gauge truly increase the cost that much?'

Yes, especially when that cost is nothing other than a totally unnecessary waste of money.
Spend the money on SG track conversion. That way you have something useful at the end of the exercise.

At the very worst when/if you must buy bogies, get BG frames and use push in wheelsets.

Unless you are laying gauge convertible concrete sleepers building anything Broad Gauge is simply wasting money that can never be recovered.  Conversion costs the same as rebuilding broad gauge with the exception the job is done and you can move onto sorting out the lack of crossing loops etc.
You then have the obvious benefit of a large wagon and Locomotive pool to draw resources from.
From my prospective it is simple.

Bendigo via echuca / Toolamba even provides a cross country freight path also.

Toolamba-Echuca line is booked out of service and will be for a very long time until a lot of money is thrown at it - its stuffed.

Word is that money will be spent on reopening Echuca-Toolamba line. A big rice crop next year will necessitate it. And with extra passenger services on the Bendigo-Echuca line soon, paths will be sparse.

This is interesting and I don't doubt you are correct but why does Victoria throw money at a line and then do nothing for years with the maintenance?  Why don't we have maintenance cycles which are funded?

I am hearing of major grain movement requirements coming on too so the Inglewood Line should be considered and I expect it will be as the government is always stating how they are working with the industry and the industry is calling for access to that line.

Some interesting things to note in the updated Marong Township Plan which goes to Council Meeting next week for approval:
https://www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/sites/default/files/2020-09/Marong%20Township%20Structure%20Plan_0.pdf

- There have been continuing discussions with the DoT and V/line regarding a new Marong Railway Station.
- But this is a long-term action.
- Business Park now proposed South of the Township about 1 km from disused Inglewood line.
- Industrial land next to line now to be repurposed as medium density residential (this is just to the West of the Station site).
