Hello,

Are the grain facilities at Shepherds Siding located between Bomen and Harefield on the Main South line in NSW still being used?

if so, who actually owns these facilities?

If not, when were they last used?

Thanks

Regards

Shepherds Siding and the silos/grainshed there was at least used by Shepherds Producers Cooperative, a grower owned grain marketing company that existed in the late 90s.   SPC unfortunately went broke and was wound up in the early 2000s

I think you'd need to do a titles search to find out who owns them now.

I thought it was a closed site (since perhaps around the SPC era) based on the few times ive driven past it but it looks sort of used based on Google maps imagery

SPC still exists as far as a brand is concerned, in former days it was independent but forget the exact number of years gone now, they amalgamated with other similar companies that were primarily Oz owned  some info here https://spc.com.au/our-story/ ith them now having a presence in NZ could mean they have a partnership with a big NZ fruit packing company.

I am pretty sure that at the time when the amalgamations took place, was really not all that many years ago and took place as a result of several farm failures along with poor prices being paid for the produce, with a number of farms pulling up trees, the areas affected mainly was in the Robinvale-Mildura-Renmark areas, drought and water issues played a part in the problems.

The result of it came down to the point where (Monbulk) was one of the first to go into the new group, also included were SPC Goulburn Valley, Ardmona with SPC now known as SPC Pro Vital.  I would suggest that the brands are more likely branded according to where the original brands were produced (canned) in which state.

The amalgamation was also an attempt to keep these companies as Australian owned, as to whether that has remained is something I cannot say for sure.

Are we talking of two 'SPCs' here?
ie 'Shepherds Producers Cooperative' and 'Shepparton Preserving Company' ?

I stopped at Sheherds Siding earlier this week, it has signed around it as being part of the Riverina Oils and Bio Energy group - they have a plant down the road a Bowmans.

Lots of Canola throughout the district. Spoke to a farmer at Illabo and he said it's going to be a really good crop, especially after last season.
