Because the customer may have a full trainload of empty containers to go back to Bordertown.

Exactly what should be happening. We need gto get serious about rail and investment in rail is a good bet with all the investment needed in the regions. There is also a business case awaiting funding from the feds for rail service between Portland and Mount Gambier.

Not even relevant to the thread.
It is not ARTC's responsibility to build railway lines to nowhere without a solid business case and clear support from the relevant state government's.

The shackles are off in terms of balanced budgets and we are being told that governments are going to need to spend their way out of the ronacession. Never been a better time for worthy rail infrastructure projects to get off the ground.Why cant ARTC extend the standard gauge line all the way down to Mount Gambier?

So I suggest you submit your business case to the relevant minister and see whether they agree with your cost / benefit analysis.
I would love to see more freight on rail but opening Wolsely > Mt G does not strike me as a viable option. Mt G > Heywood maybe but Mt G > Wolsely > Port Adelaide / POM is a long way around.
