AFL grand final 2020: decider to be played at Gabba, at night

  michaelgm Chief Commissioner

I think an AFL night grand final is a great idea that will be a ratings winner because some people have to work on Saturdays and can not watch it during the day and some people have other commitments on Saturdays and do not watch it during the day.
Spoken like a genuine TV addict.

Seems like there will be some winners in post COVID 19 world.
The AFL will finally achieve their holy grail, a night time grand final.

So it's finally happened and TV has it's night Grand Final. The idea has been strenuously opposed for some years now. In fact, it's almost a rite of passage; every year up comes the headline "Night Grand Final?", followed by the usual "everything is being considered", and the game eventually starts at 1430.
I'd say that this is the thin edge of the wedge; precedent will be set this year, and subsequent Grand Finals will be night games regardless of where they're played.
I have noticed that every year on 7 News at some point in the both weeks leading up to the AFL grand final and in the weeks after the AFL grand final there is a headline 'History making night grand final at last'? complete with backing footage of football players running around on the oval and the AFL CEO saying 'Now is the time" but before long he backflips and says 'with all being considered we are sticking to the normal start time this year'.

I think an AFL night grand final is a great idea that will be a ratings winner because some people have to work on Saturdays and can not watch it during the day and some people have other commitments on Saturdays and do not watch it during the day.

Some people like to go out Saturday nights and ...

Oops, I forgot that most Victorians cannot go out anymore!

Not quite. It's Channel 7's holy grail. They own the footy, the AFL just operates it.
If you have any doubts, go to a game and watch the field umpire after a goal is scored. He is not allowed to bounce the ball in the centre to restart play until a light signal gives him the OK, because that light means that the TV commercials have now finished. At the MCG, the light is directly across the ground from where my son and I have our reserved Hawthorn members' seats, and we can see it clearly.

Yes

G O  C A T S !!!!
I'm nearly neutral; the Hawks are nowhere this year, but my neutrality doesn't extend to our bitter rivals from Geelong.
Valvegear
Fair enough. There is nothing I like better than to beat the Hawks. Except of course win the Grand Final, oh and beating Collingwood.

Cats vs Richmond.  An all Victorian Grand Final being played in Brisvegas at the same time my kids go to sleep...

Regardless, GO CATS!

No Giants in the finals this year but I will still watch this historic final.

Field umpires are Matt Stevic (his seventh Grand Final); Simon Meredith (his sixth) and Craig Fleer (his first).

Yep; mow the lawn on Saturday, then water it on Sunday so that it grows again - the ultimate futility.

Not a bad plan. No idea what the time might be in Mundrabilla, but it's 7:30pm in Melbourne. You might be finishing the lawn in the dark.

Think I might risk mowing in the dark especially as the YMs will be watching the football. Smile
Mundrabilla is timeless so I can still dream. Rolling Eyes So peaceful and no idiots.
Being away from the AFL and all the other BS going on at the moment would be wonderful but my 'accommodation' there has been relocated/declared redundant/scrapped. Bit like myself. Laughing
Narvik would be nice as an alternative!

You have to feel for Ray Chamberlain, his chances of winning the first Norm Smith Medal at the Gabba are over.

Cops will be patrolling Melbourne's backyards with drones to check for illegal Grand Final BBQs...

Ah yes; Chatty Ray, the AFL's equivalent to Billy Bowden - "people have come to see me umpiring".

Danke Schön 'donner und blitzen' (I bloody hope).
I will keep an ear out whilst mowing the lawn when the Grand Final is on.
Anything will be an improvement over both lockdown and the blanket AFL. Not sure which is worse. Smile

There is no compulsion to watch the game you know. There are other things on TV - I'm not certain how easy it will be to mow the lawn with a possible 60mm of rain between Friday night and Saturday night in lockdown city.

Pre-game entertainment thus far has answered the question of why they call the joint Brisvegas - lots of old songs sung under bright lights with zero atmosphere.

I couldn't hear any singing; all I heard was tone deaf people screaming into microphones with others mercilessly bashing guitars and drums  around them. The exception is "Up there, Cazaly".

Richmond by 5 goals.

Ten years ago, Richmond's CEO, Brendan Gale, unveiled the club's ten-year hope/plan. It was to be debt-free, to have over 70,000 members, and three flags. He was laughed at mercilessly, and he can now enjoy watching a lot of critics wiping egg off their faces.
