Civic leaders slam fast rail for bypassing Avalon Airport, not being fast enough

Lara to Avalon would be best served by a shuttle. Could be light metro or the like.

Geelong Fast Rail to stop Geelong, North Geelong, Lara, (Werribee?), Footscray and Spencer St. Lara is borderline big enough to justify the stop on it's own, combined with Avalon traffic makes it more so. Can start as a shuttle bus for now until it's built.

For a shuttle bus you can do it like this:

  • Modify the layout at Lara Station for a low floor electric shuttle bus. So people can step out of the train walk across the platform (with their luggage) and straight into the bus. The bus stop aligns the floor of the bus with the platform so no steps.
  • The distance to Avalon is only 2-3 kms. So timing is easy. Local roads can be modified/ upgraded as required.
  • The batteries for these buses should be good for at least 3 - 4 hours between charges. So in between flights, the buses can recharge their batteries at the airport, so they stay at least 70% charged at all times. With a full recharge overnight.
  • As a second backup if required, they can arrive early at Lara Station and use a charger there for 30 minutes.

As Lara is a regular stop on this line for nearly all trains, problem solved.

Station or no station, it's still gunna' be a drive to get there.

Most will drive, that's what the Airport will market Itself as being easier and more convenient (for residents In the Geelong / South West Victoria Region) than to them traveling through to Tullamarine (public transport demand Is likely to be minimal)

The proposed airport development at Monomeith will run on the same business platform.

Geelong commuters cannot have it both ways.

Either:
  • They get a fast trip, or
  • Have the train stop at every waterhole.

Especially on such a short journey, they can't have it both ways.

The faster the train, the greater the exacerbation.

Yep, a bit hard to get to 250km/h or whatever they are (pipe) dreaming about when you are stopping all stations including a divert via Avalon.

How long do they think these horizontal elevators take to get up to speed....... and more importantly to stop from same!
