The video here shows a double track bridge on the line between Bendigo and North Bendigo workshops.  The track seems to have run dual tracks from Bendigo station to at least the north of the workshops where the second track from the left connects with the main line.

What year was the second track removed and was there 3 or 4 tracks through Bendigo station at some point now with 2.

The video shows EPSOM station with no room at all for a bypass track.

Was Bendigo racecourse before or after Epsom current location?

Second Track to North Bgo Junction was removed in late 1989.

At about the same time the 4 tracks through Bgo Station became 2.

Racecourse platform was built in 1881.  Original Epsom Station in 1889 (although a siding to the Pottery existed earlier).

I see a lot of concrete sleepers here. Is the rail still the old 41kg/ metre rail? Or has the rail been replaced recently.

Thx

Notice the bridge decking is getting replaced on the video for the non track side.

They're basically replacing life-expired timber sleepers with low-profile single gauge concrete sleepers.

I'm not sure if they've been removing the light-weight rail.  My understanding is that is a major impediment to raising the line speed.  In the past year or so long sections between Bendigo and Elmore had 50 km/h TSRs on it.  Only recently removed as far as I know.

Thanks Carnot

The line now looks like 80 kph pretty much all the way to Elmore.

I looked the follow up video from Elmore to Echuca. There is a short section of 65kph as you leave Elmore, but it soon increases to 80kph. I saw some rail by the side of the track. Is that the old rail? Or some new rail waiting to be installed?

Given the long straight sections of the line, with very gentle curves, I cannot understand why they are not traveling at 120 - 130 KPH already.

I think the video was from 2017 which was before the TSRs were slapped on it.

It needs to be classified as Class 2M/2U before it can go to 130 km/h.  Currently Class 4, although some sections are Class 3 apparently (Elmore to Echuca).  Ballast depth, sleeper condition, track ties, rail weight, track geometry, etc all influence that....

How many times do I have to post .  Track upgrade first up will allow 100kmh for DMU.

Rail is 94lb throughout.  Rail lying beside track between Rochester & Echuca is old 80lb stuff displaced 3 or so years ago,

And what does that have to do with the location of the Bendigo Racecourse?

Thanks for clearing that up Kuldalai. Lets get up to 100kph first and then see what we can do after that.

Actually it is at 6:05 in the First video to the right.

Here is a photo I took of it about 2 years ago. Use the sign as a reference point:

D'oh! You're right. I've got the same photo from about ten years ago on a backup drive. I saw the Heinz St LX, then the cut back bank.

Can I ask when that platform closed.

According to VICSIG the platform and loop was closed to traffic on the 13th May 1988. In not exactly certain when the platform coping and loop track was removed.

Here is another photo showing the ramp that passengers decended to gain access to the Racecourse. While the railings have gone the ramp itself is pretty well intact:

Why was it closed and is there a bing map reference for the site?

My guess is that it wasn't worth maintaining a platform and track for a very small handful of race meetings each year that might use it. Southern Cross Ten used to charter a train each year to attend the Bendigo Cup with passengers taking a bus from Bendigo Station to the Racecourse. This charter ceased after 2012.

Here is the exact location. Very easy to reach via Andrew St:

I found my photos of the site from December 2009. It looks pretty much like yours and had been like that for many years.

Bendigo racetrack does host a meeting at least monthly from memory a shame it is not accessible.
