Farcebook ditches News

  Carnot Minister for Railways

Well there you go. Back to websites or TV for many, unless you want Russian and CCP propaganda:

Facebook restricts sharing or viewing Australian and international news content

There’s news in Facebook?
  Carnot Minister for Railways

That's the whole point. FB was becoming a news platform and not a social media site.

Back to its roots I suppose.

It’s a fair response to the government’s new regulations, which would have required Facebook to pay media companies but without also requiring the media to pay when they get traffic directed to their sites by Facebook.

Indeed I agree with facebook.

What is not being made clear is if news appears on facebook or other sites for that matter it drives traffic to the site where it was initially posted.  News and the other media companies are benefiting from this.

Another consideration is many stories I try and read these days are behind a paywall.

I note the Guardian is not complaining.

Are there any alternatives to Facebook?

Google has alternates such as Bing, Yahoo, NortonSearch.

Doesn't bother me.  I get all my news from Railpage.

How will facebook police this anyhow when you can share a link?  Perhaps they will have a blacklist of sites you cannot share links for.

You would be amazed at the number of reads of Railpage news and the referrals to sites. 20,000+ per week just out of social media.  With the network issues resolved I expect that to double.

Really, Carnot.

It was posting a lot of misinformation and blatant lies, that's why Mark Zuckerberg had his a$$ handed to him by a Congressional hearing chaired by Queen Maxine Waters and Alexandria Orcasio-Cortez.

Not completely sure but isn't the 'news' that's on FB unless it's copy and pasted just a link back to the the news provider so FB would generate traffic back to the news outlets

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that good for news outlets plus don't these news outlets have their own FB pages

Or is this just Murdoch manipulating his puppet liberal politicians to squeeze dollars from FB and Google even though FB and Google pay bugger all tax here

I'm really unsure as I've never had FB

Watching Josh Friedburger on ABC (free) news 24 he said "let's see where this goes" but what I heard him say was let's see what we can get away with

This issue is nothing to do with either of these factors the two of you mention.

It is all about the federal government’s proposed new media regulations.

Facebook is not completely the victim in this. Mark Zuckerberg cannot make his mind up whether Facebook is a news channel or a social media platform. He wants it both ways and that's the point.

It will be interesting to see how good FB algorithms are and see if this impacts "non" news pages.

There was a claim that the BOM FB page was impacted, but it seems fine to me. Maybe there was a problem and FB corrected it.

I tend to agree with Carnot, for me personally it really means that FB is back to its original business of being a social network. I wonder if this hurts FB more, in that people will use it less due to lack of access to news or there is no change that people will live without the news feed.

Exactly.

I’m sure that the endgame for this will be Facebook agreeing to pay media companies for content to be hosted on Facebook, but only with media companies who agree to paying for their sites’ inbound traffic from Facebook.

Companies that don’t want to negotiate will lose the traffic generated by their exposure on Facebook.

The Inland Rail FB page is an ad for a government project.

Until this dispute is sorted out, it is probably in the interest of both sides that government ads not be hosted on Facebook for anything less than full market rates.

On the theme of tech companies being forced to pay when they host content from media companies, I wonder if this will force RP to open the wallet every time a news page is created?

Maybe it might go in that direction. In the end of the day, someone has to pay the journalist.
