This appeared on the Metro tunnel website update dated May 3. Part of the detail on tunnelling says 3 of the 4 TBMs are now at the Town Hall station. The tracker which always lags behind says only 2 but that's not unusual. I'm guessing a press release shortly. ??

This looks given the size to be a platform access for walking of passengers?

Unless they hang a 90 degree turn and start metro 2, yes.

No, one more is still working its way from State Library to Town Hall. Nearly there perhaps at the end of the month.

Was there any intention of continuing metro 2 from where metro 1 finishes?? I ask, as I don’t think the TBMs were being removed from the tunnels? That being a probable, I would think IF metro 2 starts there, then those TBMs could possibly be reactivated and just continue on with metro 2 at that time??

Or not?? Figured I’d ask.

Unfortunately no. There is no plan for Metro 2 at present. It's just speculation. The TBM's are dismantled and removed for either recycling or scrap at the end. Only a small part remains as part of the tunnel itself, but most is removed. It could potentially be partly removed for the suburban rail loop tunnelling next year but no announcements on that yet or what size those tunnels will be I believe. Does seem a waste they haven't been repurposed in some way.

The majority of the TBM is repurposed. It is just the outer shields and the cutting head that are replaced. The technology, hydraulics, mechanics and living quarters all get pulled out.

It could sit in storage for years, be refurbished, bolt a new cutting head and off it goes onto SRL, MARL or MM2.

As for tunnel size, I don't suspect it will be much different from MM1. Sydney Metro has been criticised for not having an emergency gangway through the tunnel. Even if SRL runs with a high frequency 4 car set, the diameter of the tunnel still needs to be able to accomodate the plethora of services.

The station platforms are coming together quite nicely here too.

I thought there was a thread on High Capacity Signalling but I didn't find one in the search function, as as it is part of the metro project, I'd ask the questions here.

The trial on the Mernda line at night on HCS, just keeps going on with new dates announced until the end of August 2021 now. Is it going to plan ? Or have their been issues that mean more testing ?

From what I've read (sorry, can't remember exactly where to provide a link) they are about 50% of the way through testing. The use of two trains was introduced not all that long ago after initial testing only used the one. I take that to mean that they are on track with everything

Ah OK, just seemed a never ending routine of adding more and more dates. Once it is done and rolled out on the Sunbury-Pakenham line (post metro tunnel), can it be applied to other lines ?, or does it need to be tested on each line separately. The original PTV network plan suggested Sandringham and Clifton Hill group would be used but that was back in 2012.

Testing it where they are has no connection to the Pakenham to Sunbury line, so, logically, once it has passed all tests, and is accredited for use in Victoria, it ought to be able to be applied to any line that 'the-powers-that-be' deem necessary or desirable. This assumes they're willing to stump up the cash to install it on both line and any/all of the trains that will run on it. That is going to be the catch as only the HCMT/Evolutions are getting it now and, I imagine that, retro-fitting will not be cheap
