Just announced that one week after VISY signed on as the major partner in the Bomen Intermodal Hub and the council has completed extensive road works in the area .
           Funding has been allocated to construct "5.6 kilometres of track to link the Hub to the Main line "Wagga Daily Advertiser .
           This project has been mooted for quite a while and it now looks to be a goer and should generate a lot of traffic in time to come .

For clarification are the road works for the new hub or the existing sidings?

If the road works and the track upgrades are for the new location wow, the council is doing a great job.

Not totally sure what you mean.

The first proponent seemed doomed when they said they were not relying on Visy, and GWA made little more sense to me.  Wagga is a services + agricultural area more than a manufacturing area (cv Albury-Wodonga), and so ignoring Visy was a flaw.

But with Visy on board it makes far more sense - it is the only significant generator in the immediate area (though still will involve an hour or so of road transport).  Visy will want to speed it up as it almost looks like there has been a disconnect with QUBE, their current provider if they are going to develop Bomen instead of continuing to use Harefield (QUBE's terminal).

Ill be interested in how much Visy will want to attract third party freight to the terminal though.  Now if SCT (or even Ettamogah) was behind this, this would be a happening development indeed.

I would say that GWA couldn't attract a customer as they dont have an intermodal network outside of Adelaide-Darwin.  Theyre coal and bulk only on the east coast, and on the main south theyre next to nothing.

For a smaller operator maybe - SSR even?  I think securing customers at the Sydney and Melbourne end might be what GWA would need though and adding these services onto them.

And agree with @bevans post, it looks like a very long and impressive work site, I presumed that it had ended where the works train was blocking the view and the rest of the vid was just showing the crossing loop until the camera swung right again!

Bevans, A quick look at Google Maps reveals it is about 4.3km long, so about 4km inside signals and catchpoints.

Given that length it would be possible to hold a full length train in clear (at either end), and still have plenty of room for work.

Yes, it's been a long time coming. As a former resident, I didn't think the Wagga Wagga City Council had the determination to see it through.

I wouldn't be that determined to see it through either. Millions being spent and no clear sign of where the business is going to come from, other than just a bunch of motherhood statements so far.

Bingly, the firm behind this terminal is Visy, see below.  This leads me to believe that the tonnes will be transferred from Harefield where the Visy tonnes from Tumut currently go.  Not sure what QUBE will do with Harefield though it will still have work for intermodal grain.

What i want to know is what access other parties will have to the terminal and what LINX down the road at the current Bomen terminal will be doing as their business will be under pressure.  Linx however has the terminals at Tocumwal, Wumbulgul and Griffith under contract (monopoly much) through the exclusive sales rights for intermodal containers (excluding bulk grain) so if theyve done the same thing here the business wont grow much.

As for james.au mention of Harefield have, I imagine it will fall into disuse with any containerised grain going through Bomen as well once the terminal is completed.
