Echuca line upgrade

  Carnot Minister for Railways

Upgraded Goornong to Epsom section is basically complete.  Just a bit of final tamping and tidying up to go.  Test and bedding-in trains should be running very soon.  It looks very nice.

New Huntly (or is it Bagshot?) Railway Station platform is half installed (rail side) too.

Goornong to Echuca has me worried though given the appallingly slow timings in the new timetable.

We spend tens of millions upgrading Epsom  Goornong to 130 kmh saves 6 minutes then insert two extra stops at Goornong and Huntly costing 4 minutes so the net gain is 2 mins earlier arrival at Exhuca and 2 mins later departure from Echuca,  Still only 80 kmh Goornong to Echuca over 60 kms. Would have been better to spend the dollars bringing 80 kms Epsom to Echuca up to Class - 3 allowing min 100 kmh for DMU would have saved like 15 mins less 2 extra stops ; 10 mins earlier arrivals at Echuca and 10 min later departures. No one manages , no one cares .

How disappointing. I actually thought the entire line was supposed to be getting upgraded to 100km/h or more.

Don't mind me, I'm just going to go and bang my head against a brick wall.
  Carnot Minister for Railways

I wouldn't discount the possibility of Goornong to Echuca being sped up to 100 km/h sometime soon.

Proof will be in the pudding with the timetable after Huntly Station is built and ETOs come online.

Not V/Line's fault that the Victorian Government's infrastructure hasn't been upgraded since around Federation, or Operation Phoenix at best.

This one goes back three plus VLP CEO''s to 2011 when the then incumbent told Minister Terry Mulder that if the Liberal Governemnt coughed up umpteen $ million to upgrade most lx between Bendigo and Echuca to boom barrier protection that VLP would allow VL to run at 100kmh saving 18 minutes on the trip time.

Treasury coughed up the asked amount and VLP finally delivered the initial program a year late. VLP not renown for costing things very well then asked for more $ to complete the program which was finally given. Then the Government changed and next VLP CEO came in . New Minister asked when was the promised 100 kmh speed going to be implemented. VLP went into Colonel Klink mode "I know nussing" about any commitment to increase the line speed.  And so after 10 years we still have after millions further $ expenditure on bridge re-decking and indertion of of thoudands of concrete sleepers and now this latest 20 kms of Clas-2M track we are still stuck with VLP so far refusing to increase the speed between Goornong and Echuca above a pathetic 80 kmh. the Rail Operators as such should NOT be dicatating the track standards , that is a job for Victrack as asset owner or the Directorate of Rail Safety.
Would the Federal Government accept a situation where Qantas, Virgin and rex all set their own operating air safety standards ? Of course NOT so why are rail operatrors in Victoria dictating track standards resulting in differing classes of vehichles being allowed to run at different speeds on similar classes of track.

They used to.
The Commonwealth Railways had a significant role in supervising the VR NE SG, and the WA and SAR standarisation projects of the 1960s and early 1970s on behalf of the Federal Government.
All the traditional government railways set their own standards and it is only the result of privatisation, corporatisation, politicalisation, amateurisation (call it what you like) that the present shambles prevails.

So an outer suburb of Bendigo gets a fast train, and the Echuca line is left at third world speeds. Guess where the electoral boundaries are.

This is I agree disappointing.  I would be bringing the line to Echuca up to a much higher standard.

Anybody know if they've been completing work or running trains on the line? I walk across the line daily and have started noticing deep rail marks in the dirt and gravel build ups on the line.

I haven't seen a works car on the line for around a year!
  Carnot Minister for Railways

They've been rail milling this past week and readjusting LX crossing timings.

A push-pull freight train is planned to run bedding-in duties from later this week.

So does it look like it will be ready by December 1 then ? In some form at least.

Probably, T385 and S312 returned from their exile last night and Qube are now running the bedding in train with VL360 and VL356 top and tailed on a rake of loaded 40' flats.

New timeatble including stops at goornong starts 12/12 and arrives Echuca 2 mins earlier, and departs Echuca 2 mins later on the Up.

VL356-VL360 locos have been swapped with X31 and G532 today for Consolidation train duties.  X31 will be the first loco in VR blue and gold on the upgraded section of the line.

They were doing deflection measurements back in September. That was going to determine if the track could go to Class 3 (100 km/h) or requires a whole lot more work to achieve that.

But where would all that Peco code 55 jointed Setrack go if it was ripped up? I don't want to throw everything away! Code 83 welded nickel flexi track on concrete style sleepers costs money you know. Smile

Do we know the outcome of these measurements or are we just hoping for the best?

To be honest, I hope your right, I'm just a bit sceptical with this line as the promises have been coming for so many years now.
