Fire damages railway station
From: AAP
July 27, 2006

A SUSPICIOUS fire damaged a railway station and disrupted train services in Melbourne's south-east overnight.

Police were called to Westall railway station in Rayhur Street, Clayton South, following a report of a minor assault and youths running from the station about 11.30pm (AEST) yesterday, police said.
A fire began in a waiting room a short time later and spread through the weatherboard building to a ticket office, damaging a ticket machine.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman said trains were stopped on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines for two hours.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious and a guard was placed at the scene overnight.

Connex Trains staff and detectives will investigate today.

I seen the station on the news, the fire looks like it spread out a lot.

Will there be a tempoary station building for the meantime? And if it is badly damaged, will it be demolished and rebuilt? And also, what platform was it on?

Down platform I don't think has any buildings - so it would be the up platform's buildings.

It would be the up Platfrom. All the down platfrom has is a little bus shelter.

Has anyone had an inspection of it to see what has happened? Is it going to removed and replaced with a structure a bit like Hallam, or does it look repairable?

Heres a picture I took of the Up platform (the one with the building) about 3 weeks ago - glad that I took it:

Well, since I live there, I can say it looks repairable, but it won't be cheap. The thing's burnt from the end closest to the camera to the new purple seats. Not only that, but the power is out I think, at least it was when I was there last night (and saw those youths there running away).

Connex did arrange buses for Westall --> Clayton and well, luckily it's not a busy station peak hour otherwise it would be horrible. All down trains are fine.

I saw the damage to the building at Westall today and I reckon it is damaged enough to be demolished. Given that there is a brand new housing development rapidly being completed behind it, I think it's time Westall got a new 21st century standard station building.

Up services were not stopping at Westall this morning, and as far as I could tell, that was still the case this afternoon.

How busy would Westall be in both peak and off peak, compared to other stations on the network?

It wouldn't surprise me if, patrionage wise, Westall is the quietest station between Caulfield and Dandenong. Possibly only Hughesdale and Yarraman would be as low, though compared to some stations around Melbourne, its use isn't that low.

Dear All

My pics from Westall around 15:30 this afternoon are now online - http://s34.photobucket.com/albums/d113/tram3003/

UP trains were still not stopping at around 18:00 - a bus service was running from Westall to Clayton, there appeared to be 4 buses on duty when I was there earlier. Connex staff on duty at both Westall and Clayton.

PRIDE was announcing the trains as not stopping at Westall - I got some recordings on my camera of the green buttons at other stations.   Wink

wow, looks pretty bad. I hope they demolish it and rebuild it completly. I'm sure if they attempted to rebuild it the station will look very dodgy.

Craig I must have missed you by about 15 minutes! Surprised

I was there at about 3:45 this arvo and I agree the building will probably have to be demolished.

Grendas group were doing the bustitution with a 100% low floor fleet.

So far the majority of people are saying that the station will have to be demolished. Then does anyone have an idea of what the new station will look like, of course they will go for a cheap option.  Rolling Eyes

BTW: Did this train station have any value in history?

I did see you - twice!  Razz

I was sitting on bus #216 when your DOWN train arrived.

As I had planned to go out to Narre Warren to get some PRIDE recordings, I decided I didn't have time to chat.

Then when I came thru Westall a bit later, you were at the UP end ped. crossing.

Kind Regards

Videoing a train running express through Westall. And the sun went away at the crucial moment. Sad

Ah well, g'day on the forums instead. Razz

Ouch. Based on Craig's pictures, its essentially beyond repair - it could be fixed, but would most likely be cheaper to demolish it and build a bus-shelter type structure i.e. like Hallam, Officer, Montmorency or Keilor Plains.

As for what  a new shelter would look like, here is a picture of Officer, platform 1 as a guideline:

Also, if you look closely at the ticker-tape in Craig's photos, its marked as "Asbestos dust hazard" - another reason why it is likely to be demolished.

Gee, those Metlink station signs must be flame r-e-t-a-r-d-a-n-t or something - the building is scorched around it, but the sign looks just fine  Smile

That looks essentially the same as Coburg's DOWN platform. That type of station building probably would have been built if it were burned down ten years ago, but today it's probably more likely to end up Keilor Plains style.

Edit: damn profanity filter...

Keilor Plains was desgined by M>Train, so I doubt that style would get used again. KP IMO looks like something from a "station-in-a-box" kit purchased from the local Bunnings Warehouse Rolling Eyes

Does Westall still retain a panel in the signal bay, or is it all worked from Springvale?

'Station in a box' - now that's an interesting mental image  Laughing

What I was trying to get at was that the station would probably have some rather basic shelters put up in the meantime, apart from being cheaper, it means money isn't wasted on a structure that might only last until the third track goes through. Although, I suppose this could also mean a more substantial structure might be built in preparation for those works.

The proposed third track will be alongside the existing DN track, so it would only be platform 2 (the one with the bus shelter) that would be modified.

They won't build a proper building there even if it is permanent as they aren't intending to re-staff Westall.

It'll make it a longer job though. They'll have to decontaminate the whole area, there's no telling how far the fire may have spread asbestos dust.
