Car Set SN7 to enter service this week

  kuldalai Chief Commissioner

IIRC the intention is to acquire a second generation Velocity type train in around 5 years time to start replacing the loco hauled trains .

The P locos (as re-builds of 1955 T class) and H cars as re-builds of 1956 suburban cars would be a high priority for replacement .  Ditto the few A class locos as re-builds of 1950's B class .

However VLP has an exploding patronage which looks likely to achieve above average on-going growth owing to frequency of service offered, value for money fares, and sustained high pricing of petrol.

Currently on order 14 intermediate motor cars for building up 14 Vlocity sets to three car consists will be delivered in 2008, and 2 x additional 2 car Vlocity sets (plus the single replacement for the Trawalla write off) are expected late this year .

Would expect VLP to move progressively to situation of total DMU operation in off peak, topped up by N class loco hauled operation in peak periods on Inter-urban runs only .

You certainly won't see a loco hauled N set on Echuca as that would only be allowed 65kmh beyond Bendigo extending the already too slow travel time.  In fact given the low passenger numbers generally beyond Bendigo on both the Swan Hill and Echuca legs ,  those services will no doubt get Inter City DMU's with catering first . The Warrnambool and Albury services would go DMU last as they have the biggest patronage beyond the Inter-urban area .

Because of driver availability SN7 will now be transferred from Newport Workshops on Friday morning. It will be on a test run to Geelong and then return to Southern Cross. It will then be internally cleaned at EDI's West Melbourne depot and return to service on the 1655 Marshall service Monday.

At this stage my spies haven't informed me of the times but I will post them later if I find out.

My spies tell me it'll be transferred on the usual Ex Newport Workshops via Geelong transfer path - with times as follows:-

Train: 0555 (Light Loco)
N Loco dep Southern Cross for Newport Workshops: 0913
N Loco arr Newport Workshops ex Southern Cross: 0940

Train: 8293 (Test run to Geelong)
N Loco + SN7 dep Newport Workshops for Geelong: 1035
N Loco + SN7 arr Geelong ex Newport Workshops: 1130ish

Train: 8292 (Test run ex Geelong)
N Loco + SN7 dep Geelong for Southern Cross: 1248
N Loco + SN7 arr Southern Cross ex Geelong: 1413

As per most transfers, these times will probably be inaccurate for the up trip - they tend to get away from Geelong earlier.

They are not going to be there tomorrow at Spencer street just to let everyone know.

The new car set, "SN7" is coming out next week to run the Geelong line

Get your facts right next time Stinky.

You get YOUR facts right.

I've bolded and coloured the relevant parts of STINKY's post for you.

Did the transfer happen today? I was at Southern Cross this afternoon about 2pm, and the set might have been lurking about in the Dudley Street sheds, but could see the number on the end. V/Line needs to reintroduce the big set numbers like the VN sets had. Laughing

I'm a big fan of V/Line loco hauled passenger services. It would be a real pitty to se them go though.

Ageed, its the same with me.

The set was still split at Newport Workshops at 1700 this evening,it didn't look even close to resuming service.

Car set SN7 will remain at Newport for the next 3 to 7 days because of battery faults with the cars. I will try to post the details of when the set will leave Newport when the details are available.

Hi all

SN7 will be out shopped from NWS on monday 3rd Sept to spencer st passenger yard will go into EDI's CMD  to have a full internal clean and run over for other repairs and will probably run the 1655 mas on tuesday  and will return with the 0715 ex mas to spencer st the following morning at this stage the train will consist of 5xBS cars and ACN21 and might be reduced back to a 5 car set A/C placement of the set in the yard at bank sidings

also FSH27 should be released sometime during this month after it has done a couple of test runs to geelong and return at NIGHT and from what i have been told and it wont be released to traffic till further notice

Watch out ceo, they don't like CMD being used! It's WMD!!! Razz

And by FSH27, you mean FSH25?

I have a feeling the set will be at Southern Cross for the publicity launch in the second week of September.

So is there going to be a public launch/open day of the new livery??

Correct.

Distribution and sharing of photos of the new livery is trying to be restricted as much as possible before the actual public release of the livery at the launch.

Can I ask a stupid question. Why is the SN set only being introduced into service?

Is it due to the less carriages/trains that are available due to N7's fate. Also I know that ACN21 was involved in Kerang.

Increasing patronage following last years revamped new timetable and March's fare reduction, along with the unexpected loss of two carriages from set N7 account the Kerang accident, has meant that V/Line have been especially short of carriages (they were already short before Kerang).

This has resulted in the return of the five stored BS cars after retention toilets being fitted to three of the five cars (BS215, BS216, BS217), with ACN21 (unscathed in the Kerang accident) being used as the first class carriage and conductors compartment  - these cars making up set SN7.

The BN & BRN cars, BN19 and BRN20 respectively, are awaiting detailed structural inspection to determine the feasibility of rebuilding the cars.

It is most likely the BRN won't return, but provided the frame of the BN doesn't have any major issues which can't be rectified, it may return as a BZN.

The BN and BRN are still under the control of the coroner and will be till the final report on the incedent is tabled. This will be atleast a year from the date that it occured.

As for the H cars. I have to say, the photo's I have seen, I think it was this thread, was a terrible photoshop job.

Ain't a photoshop job Shacks, if you're referring to the one that got out in the 'New V/Line Livery' thread a few weeks back.

That's what they'll be - I've seen the cars in person, and the plans for the livery.

Around the V/Line logo is the worse case of isolated pixelation I have ever seen, also known as an average photoshop job.

The photo maybe quite pixelated in parts, but all I can put it down to would be the amount of JPEG compression used. As more compression is used, finer details lose their detail.

It certainly isn't a photoshop - and I doubt the logo was photoshopped in.

Look up on the railings on the wall of the workshops, and on the tree branches.
