Well todays Ghan is a monster at near on 1,000 metres long
It is reportedly the longest passenger train in Australia in near on 10 years
(I believe the previous longest was the first Ghan into Darwin when the line opened)

The arrangement of the current train sees the locos and the first 26 carriages docked in Platform 1, this portion departed at 11:45am then set back on the remaining 16 carriages which were docked in Platform 2, with completed departure at 12:15pm

NR52 NR46 with triple plus consist of 40 carriages
8050 having a stint as terminal shunter this week
Ok the delayed departure was a result of problems with NR52 which could not be solved, so the Ghan departed with NR46 powering and proceeded to Islington, where loco where detacted and then proceeded to Dry Creek and onto the Port Flat branch, then reversed back towards Dry Creek (effectively turning the locos) then ran back to the consist and re-attached.
So the motive power became NR46 NR52, eventually departing passing under the Port Wakefield Road overpass at 13:55pm.
PN had no spare (suitable) locos available to replace NR52!

No motorail will be available on the Ghan until November 2016 account the Southbound "Expedition" special now operating.
Southbound Ghan Expedition service (4DA8 ) is a 4 day/3 night trip arriving Adelaide on Saturdays, it includes a 12 hour stop over in Alice Springs (normal stop is 3.5hours) and a 11.5 hour stop over at Coober Pedy (Manguri)(normally 2 hour)
{it seems there is not enough room at Manguri for the motorail to be included in the consist!}
