Anyone involved with the Ghan Society in AS shed any light on the new batteries for NSU58?
What type have been purchased?
When is delivery due?
When will NSU58 subsequently be started and used to operate trains?
What unit price are their new batteries for NSU58?

After some new batteries are you ?
I belive Ike will have your answer, but I think he is still in Adelaide.

Shacks,
I hope not allready.  I put some new batteries in NSU52 in December 2004, but deviated from the standard. 14 months on, these new babies are still looking and performing greatly.  If sucessful, there are potential savings for TR operators with vintage diesels, although this method will only work to it's best potential with 110VDC control systems (like the Sulzers and EE), this won't be effective with 74VDC control systems.

What sort of batteries are you using? I'm intrigued, whats been done to make it an ideal system for 110V systems as against the 74 V system?

110V Sulzer/EE locomotive control systems utilise a battery made up of 48 cells to give a nominal battery open circuit potential difference of 110V, usually in the form of 12 x 4 cell battery units
74V EMD/GE?anything else utilise a battery made up of 32 cells to give a nominal battery open circuit potential difference of 74V, usually in the form of 8 x 4 cell battery units
What was done with NSU52 (based on HVTR C and X class DE's) was to replace the railway cranking batteries with N200 batteries, 8 x 6 cell battery units, still maintaining 48 cells for nominal 110V
On a 74V system that requires 32 cells, you would need 5 x 6 N120/150/200 batteries plus still require two more cells to make 32 cells. If you only used 5 x 6 cell batteries you will come up short on some voltage and cranking capacity, and when you have the engine running, the charging from the locomotive going into lesser number of cells wouldn't be good for the cells

I'm not anywhere near Alice and the only battery I am using is the one in my car.

Ike1,
I had also heard that NSU58 might have been short an A7 independant handle!!
Out of curiosity, what sort of brake does the DH run? Also, W924, has vacuum been retained on the engine unit or is it all air?
