Disused siding at Dombarton

G'day all

Today while riding aboard CL22 back to Sydney, I noticed what appeared to be a disused junction siding of some sort at Dombarton, located approximately to 97.010km which is immediately after the Down Main points on the Down side. The points are also facing in the Down direction.

Would anyone know what this siding use to serve? Is there some resource facility nearby, or is it just some kinda perway siding? Having been on this route two million gazillion times, today I took a ride from a different perspective and noticed many things which aren't easily picked from the carriages.

Maikha, next time you are on CL21, pop into the station at Robbo at get a copy of the "Illawarra Mountain Railway"  the latest edition has a red cover and it is $5 (free plug!).

It shows the old configuration of the unique passing loops that were there before a realignment and duplification in the early 1990's.  Also on John Hurst's site there are some photos.

I believe what remains, is one of the refuge sidings from the old alignment which has been connected to the new alignment.

Hope that helps

I don't suppose it has anything to do with the aborted Maldon-Dombarton line? If not, where would that have left the Unanderra-Moss Vale line from there?

Yes thats right the runaway road, in later times as you come down the mountian you had to call complex at 1058 signal and tell then you had your train under control, then they would set the road for you to unanderra, but before that is was a refuge, when Dombarton was maned...
hope thats helps you....

The runaway road is on the Up side, with the points obviously facing Up trains. Is this what you mean Maikha, or is it definitely on the Down side?

My understanding of Dombarton was the two refuge sidings were on the Up Side and the line on the Down side was a headshunt. The refuge sidings and headshunt were close to level while the main line continued through on a steep grade.

Down trains which had to cross ran into the headshunt then set back into one of the refuges. Up trains which had to cross ran into one of the refuges, then set back into the headshunt before proceeding.

This is a rough hand drawn sketch of a diagram I remember seeing in a magazine years ago.

It's been quite a while but I think the bit of track that Maikha's talking about is just a continuation of the Down line. When they double tracked from Unanderra to Dombarton they kept going a bit past that 1121 trailing crossover. If the line to Maldon had gone ahead the Moss Vale line MAY have been slewed to connect to that bit of track or maybe there would have been a junction closer to the tunnel? Whatever the case, I think Maikha's siding is just a bit of stagework that would have been part of the planned layout that got canned when the line to Maldon was shelved.
