Noted on Saturday about 12:20pm was a Hitachi unit with 299M bring up the rear crawling over the Childs Rd crossing. It appeared to be not in service and entering the Epping yard.

Good news hitachi 299m 294m ran the 8:11am flinderstreet service today departing platform 1 at reservoir and managed to catch it, hopefully we see them more often out and around the place as these trains don't have long before a second and final retirement.

Is this the service that only runs to Flinders st then returns to Epping to stable ? have a feeling it is , one of the few services i understand Hitachi's can still run

I have noticed a recent increase in cancellations in the peaks - like the days of the sacrificial trains that often did not run. Is this because the Hitachis are not available to make up the numbers?

I'd be nice if someone could post actual facts rather than just rumours. A few weeks ago the Hitachis were retired, then allocated to weekend use only and now they are running peak hour services? Surely there must be some official word from MTM..

Surely there must be some official word from MTM..Mate your in the same boat as me, one day hitachis are running frequently, the next day their retired, the next day been reactivated, etc and it's kind of annoying I know man, also hitachi 294m 299m was spotted in the main epping yard all powered up saying epping on the desto today, I guess it was an epping terminated train that did a couple runs on Tuesday in the morning for the day, but still was kind of good hearing the horn and seeing the silver come around the bend.

Until there is some official word from metro then they are still kinda active I guess. Would metro make a statement about withdrawing them though? I was not of adult status when the harris trains ended their service on the metropolitan network but I am curious to know if it was made public in the media that they did announce the dimise of the harris. Is it news worthy to announce the withdrawal of the hitachi????

I wouldn't think anyone would be in a hurry to announce their (3rd time around?) demise again, just in case they still need them on the odd occasion for cancellations/shortages etc.
You'd think it'd just be easier to have them in a ready to go-stored state (similar to the VLP A's) than have to do work on them to bring them out of hibernation.

Well. If you read other posts. You'd see that they run as EMPTY car services on weekends and when another train fails they come into play...
Every Saturday a 6 car set runs Hurstbridge to South Morang and return. They do get rotated.. When I don't know.
And I doubt MTM will make a post about retiring Hitachi's. They would remain in service but under limited use.

I posted something yesterday but must have been removed for some reason, anyway hitachi 288m 273m was spotted at Reservoir station running the 8:11 am service to flindersteet yesterday. the second time in 2 weeks a hitachi has been in service and running the 8:11 service in the morning, they like to like running it.

The 2 Hitachi sets at Epping still stabled on the former station site shut down , also spotted 2 Hitachi M cars on the back of trucks in a yard in Dandenong on the corner of south gippsland highway and Dandenong bypass , both M cars had no pantos are are in Metro livery , they were parked beside the 3 Comenge cars that were involved in the crash down that way

hey bill did you manage to catch the numbers of the hitachis on the truck because it sounds to me that their working life has ended and they will become tin cans probably, fingers crossed maybe it was hitachi 292m-284m set which derailed a while back that they are disposing of maybe because they cant fix it/too expensive/ don't need it no more and probably just keeping the 2 hitachis at epping for backup trains if they need them. also forgot to mention on Friday I went to check out epping and noticed the two hitachis and saw that one 3 car set was in the maintenance shed receiving work on it and if they wanted to get rid of these trains would they still be servicing? seems like they are just limited to what they run now

And they are not in Metro livery they are in The Met livery.

just by the quick look i got they had no side stickers/decals and very clean , looked like darkend tinted windows aswell from the road

Probably the centre motors from the derailed set - 291M (or 283M), like every other non-leading car, has no livery or anything besides the road number and some high-vis yellow stripes under the doors, not even the blue and yellow stripes on the front. 291M's panto was also wrecked during the derailment.

That rules out Metro's cars then, The Met stripes giving it away. The car in the picture was also a lead car in its days on the rails, rather than a disused centre motor.

Noted last Saturday morning 7.55am Hitachi units with 294M in the lead running empty down passing through Lalor station. I assume it went into the yard at Epping.

hitachi 299m 294m spotted at reservoir running the 8:11am flinderstreet service, can't believe how many times I've seen hitachis run this service in 3 years considering there are only 4 units runnings well 2 at the moment from my understanding and also considering how rare it is to see a hitachi in service and not stabled
