First/Only Refreshment Rooms on the NAR?
"Guard Class 2"

That's it Guard Class 2!    The two trains a week used to stop there for 20 minutes for refreshments.    The rooms apparently lasted until well after WWII.

The other notable thing about Adelaide River I would have accepted is that it is the only place on the old NAR that the Alice Springs - Berima line goes anywhere near - it runs though the yard on the old main line alignment.   Everywhere else it is some distance away.

Thanks Kipioneer,

Change of subject.

The 500 Class steam loco's were one of the few classes of Loco's where the whole Class were named.

Can you name them all?

Thanks Walter, you are quite correct.

Obviously a little too easy, but a quick answer keeps the wheels turning, and gives someone else a turn.

All yours Walter.

Thanks Guard Class 2, I was just lucky that I had read 500 a few days ago!

The Question:
What date was the last piece of the old main line through Murray Bridge closed, and what was it being used for immediately before it was closed?

Here comes a question for your question ...(huh?).

The 'old' mainline that you are referring to, would that be the original rail track that ran across the road bridge?
  Walter Junior Train Controller

Location: Lurking, but not very well
Yes, it is the one that ran across the road bridge.

I will have a guess just to start the ball rolling.

From memory, the part leading from the station yard area to behind the billboard (where it used to emerge onto the road bridge) was being used for storage of wagons, and also had a coal chute on it. Perhaps this was closed after/during standardisation. Sorry, can't give you an exact date, but this should at least create some discussion.

I'll say it was 1927.

That's one half of the answer.

No?

Location: Lurking, but not very well
Nope, it was a lot later than 1927, but before standardisation. It was not used for any revenue-making purpose (coal, grain, etc.). When it was closed, another small siding was reopened.

Was it to store work trains and crew cars for track work?

Was it to store work trains and crew cars for track work?
"SAR621"

No.  I know the answer to the second part of the question, and if I can be bothered going through past issues of Catch Point, I will be able to answer the first part.  There is still a chance for someone to beat me to it...
  SAR621 Chief Commissioner

Ooo, ooo, I know, its between 1900 and 2000.... Can I call a life line?

Don't bother calling me.  I can tell you the second part of the question can be found in the January 1984 issue of The Recorder...
  Walter Junior Train Controller

Location: Lurking, but not very well
No, it was not used for storing wagons. It was between 1900 and 2000, though.
4BJ, I don't have the January 1984 Recorder, so I don't know if you are right or not. Don't bother with Recorders for the whole answer, though.

That should help to make the time period a little smaller.

I'll leave it to someone else to post the year.

The purpose perhaps for the old line was to function as a stable for the MB yard shunter. 500 class DE?

I'll add that the cutting is still there today, right beside the abandoned Train Control Room ( if that indeed is still standing).

Okay, since no-one seems to be having much luck, I think that it is time for a clue as to its use.

I can assure most on line that for a period of time the shortened dead end (which lead onto the existing now road bridge) which was backfilled to form a deliberate dead end, was used to load ballast, prior to a new ballast loading facility being established adjacent to the livestock yards about 3kms west of Murray Bridge - just prior to the steep grades leading through Rocky Gully.  Hope most understand that.  In later years the 500 class local shunter (as already mentioned was stabled there). 8)

also the return of the tailem bend school trains baggage/guards van was stabled there in the 70s

Okay, I think that I have successfully confused many, many people, and now we are getting off topic. Perhaps it is time to simplify the question a bit:

When was the ballast siding in Murray Bridge (the one that used to be part of the old main line) closed?

What we have established so far:
-After Recorder and Catch Point were combined
-Before 2000

Wheres Larrie Emdur to say Higher, Lower?

I'll make a guess, 1991.
