Warrnambool line freight

I have noticed this week that PN are running two separate single G powered trains daily. Is this just a seasonal increase or something new?

It looks like the return trip to Warrnambool is taking longer than 24 hours, so two locos and two sets are working on alternate days.

As part WGTP Works there isn't any access to Swanson Dock at the moment, so everyone is having to use Appleton Dock, and therefore there is reduced capacity at the moment.

Announced this week the fonterra factory and Dennington has been sold to a local consortium which is really good news.  Hopefully production will expand or at least not shrink as I understand their export product comes on the Warnnambool Goods to Melbourne.

Whatever happened to the meat processing factory plans to use rail to the port?

From what I understand export meat goes by rail, through the Intermodal terminal.

G528 9204 PN Warrnambool freight running to a single train once again.  Do we  know how many containers the train is now carrying?

The UP Warnambool Goods with G528 got stuck last night at Newport area requiring G543-G522 to come light from Dynon to drag the train into Melbourne. The down working left this morning via Bunbury Street (very late at 7am) with G522 so G528 the likely issue.

Have we seen any real changes in loading volumes out of Warrnambool over the past 6 months?

Answering my own question now Smile

Warrnambool's Midfield Meat may close its doors for six weeks

The reason why two train sets are currently working the Warrnambool line freight is because the broad gauge Geelong tracks are closed between Manor Junction and Laverton for like 3 months to remove three "dangerous and congested"  (all of them !!!) level crossings. Temporary slued single sg track through the area to allow sg operations to continue. So Warrnambool Freighters run via  RRL and in doing so the one set cannot have enough time at the port so therefore two sets in use for the next few months till the three "dangerous and congested" level crossings are "Gone forever".

4 or 5 extra km's ain't going to make much of a difference, add In the low speeds around Brooklyn / Newport and your probably talking something like  2-3 minutes ?

Apparently there is more to it than that and I can assure that one set cannot do it in time at port end, so two sets are running till the broad gauge via Werribee re-opens late november, early December .

We need to remember that rail freight in Victoria is not meant to be successful.
