I would say that it is not out of the bounds of possibility that freight trains at Sunbury will be as rare as hens teeth somewhat soon.
They're all gonna go via Echuca-Toolamba-Seymour as soon as the works are finished Echuca-Toolamba.
That would take longer and they don't hold up the Fast Snail project because the train before them is normally 2 sprinters at 2:35 and the one after the freight comes through after 4:00!
I agree with 574M....it's only a matter of time before the Echucas start going th other way, they ain' fixing it for nothing. You have to look at the bigger picture, not just that because 9083 can get a path at that time, that it will always do that.
It has't always run on that path, as customer requirements change, so does the trains schedule. The plan is to introduce i believe, a pie cart service from Bendigo - Echuca, once that happens, it starts getting in the way of things. When they start running wheats back to Swan Hill again on a regular basis, they'll run up the straight, because the times if day it runs at, doesn't tend to get in the way of the pass's. It now has to run later anyway on the up, due to the extra day return to Swan Hill, it has to follow it back. So it tends to run about 2 hours later now on the up than it used to.
On a slightly related note, since the RFR has opened up, the evening Swan Hill is now all over the place, twice in the last week it's left Bendigo 90 mins late, and it's not uncommon now to see it 20 - 30 mins late. Pre rfr...you just about set your watch by it. A vast imprevoment over the old system !!
