Fire at Westall station

  Revenue Chief Commissioner

My understanding is that there isn't asbestos danger at this location. When the station burnt down, they checked the register and found it was listed as a station with asbestos (and erected the warning signs). More detailed checks have confirmed that the area burnt did not contain asbestos. Demolition of the damaged building will occur very shortly.

Ironically, the ticketing equipment was probably worth more than the building - we'll be doing some more equipment rearranging to equip the new station.

I hope they catch the fire lighters but it could be anyone knowing that area and even visiting Westall SC before. With the fact that it looks beyond repair (except for the metlink signs which are designed to last until the year 3000 Very Happy ), they will most likely build a open air design such as the ones at officer, hallam and similar. Unless it had a signal board room then they would have to build a proper building. Maybe something like the future plans for Heatherdale Station would be a suitable replacement (but because it is unmanned, they will go KP style with just metal ugly bus shelters with no protection Confused )

Also, could someone be kind enough to lend a picture of the burnt building to the Wikipedia article? That would be great. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westall_railway_station%2C_Melbourne

Feel free to use one of my pics - I can't be bothered updating the site myself though, someone else can.

Given asbestos isn't an issue, has thought been given to putting the charred remains on eBay; you never know what gunzels might pay.   Split up of course, to maximise interest, revenue, opportunity and most importantly competition!   But who am I to advise on asset sales; there's experienced people who know far more about it than I ever will.

BTW, it must be possible to give that burnt TVM a second chance.  I was thinking Tranzit Jim, but substituting it for Railpage's toaster makes more sense IMHO.  Wink

You can bid for the other stuff, but please leave the poster cases, since they're needed at operational stations such as Patterson  Wink

The proposed third track will be alongside the existing DN track, so it would only be platform 2 (the one with the bus shelter) that would be modified.
"Somebody in the WWW"
How do you know which side the third track will be?

Does Westall still retain a panel in the signal bay, or is it all worked from Springvale?
"ninthnotch"
It is worked from Springvale.

JoM- wouldn't the third track more likely be next to the existing DOWN track, at Westall at least, because there is already a third track leading from Westall sidings to just UP of Springvale station?

Perhaps it would be more likely on the down side; I was simply asking if he knew or was assuming.  And one of the reasons I ask is that I'm not sure if it has been decided yet.  I have seen plans for the third track, but I gather that the whole thing is being reviewed, probably because the original plan didn't allow for grade separations.  So even if it was on the down side to start with, it doesn't mean that it necessarily will be in the final plan.

But there are reasons for thinking that it will be on the up side.  Putting it on the up side would allow for the island platforms to be between the up and centre tracks, consistent with the Box Hill and Moorabbin third track arrangements.  And the through siding that you refer to is used for running around the quarry train; they may prefer to have a third track and retain the through siding.  Also, there is no need to favour the down side from a space or layout point of view, as there used to be a siding on the up side anyway.

JoM, they retained an emergency panel in there?

There used to ba a siding on the up side between Springvale and Westall maintainence yard (before the passive ped crossing) you can see the old over head frames still in place.

Yes, as well as the one at Westall I mentioned, there was a loop siding adjacent to the up line on the up side of Springvale Road crossing.

Has anyone went past and taken a look yet - have they started demolishing the station building yet?

I was just thinking ot myself, and was wondering that if grade seperationdid occur, where would it most likely heppen?

I have thought about them all, and have decided that Clayton would be the most necessary. It could cover 2-in-1, Centre Road and Clayton Road. Springvale Road should be taken into consideration. The other ones of interest are Poath Road, Murrumbeena Road and Koornang Road nd Grange Road. All in fairly residential areas, especially Poath Road. IMHO with the close proximatey of stations, and problems with room at Hugesdale, that the line should be elevated from Carnegie to Oakleigh, (To an extent) (It already sort of is between Murrumbeens and Hughesdale)
I also thought about how o take care of Grange road - as part of the Caulfidl Grade-Seperation, I had an idea oon how the third track could be a flyover, and remain so until the DOWN side of Grange Road. That only leaves Carnegie to deal wih - but with Murrumbeena and Hughesdale G/S and Grange Road without the 3rd track - there are plenty of options.

Also - another thing that occured to em was the way that Caulfield - Oakleigh would be so hard, but Oakleigh - SPringvale should be relatively easy, with maybe a few problems at Clayton!

Anyway - with Westall - is their any chance of having a 4th platform, so that when the line only comes to Springvale, the local trains can originate at Westall? However, once the line is complete all the way through, the local trains should erminate at Dandenong

Also - what sort of patronage oes Westall get? I would imagine not that much.

Also - How is the station at the moment, what temporary measures have been done? Forgive me for being blunt, but I do not recall reading it in this thread...

"station street"

At the moment mainly students from Westall Secondary College, and workers from the nearby Business Park. There should be more though once there are people living in "The Village" residential development to the south of the station.

Temporary fencing has been erected around the entire station building, with the temporary entrance via a pathway next to the side of the building with the most damage.

So I guess that confirms that they will not rebuild the station from the damage. I wonder how the new station will look.

They started a few days ago. They have pulled down the tin roof down and they have removed the wall between the waiting room and where the Entrance was.
The Ticketing equipment on platfrom 2 has been switched off. I don't know how long it has been off for.
Heres a photo.
