Whatever happened to Train Ads?

Does anyone remember the ads which used to be on electronic signage at each end of the carriages? It obviously did not work but did anyone ever see an ad on those things? All I remember are the ads for the ads?

These days, they've been condemned to display "Hold onto" >> "handrail" for their entire lives. They currently reside above the escalators at Parliament station.

There's a thread in the forums that had photographs of the abovementioned displays reverting to their original use, but they aren't viewable due to the Gallery being down.

Here's a link to the thread, anyway.

Some of them still display train ads at Parliament station... I stood there for three minutes one day when I was bored just watching one do it.... ahhhh the memories!

Did any of them actually display ads... Or just advertise themselves? I never saw anything but that 1800 number.

IIRC they used to display just themselves, "TRAIN ADS ... BY ... LOCOMOTION" and "Put your name here nnn times and be seen by over nnnnnnn people" along with the 1800 number. The actual sentence should be archived somewhere on RP. Smile

You've got to wonder, where did the signs come from since the Comeng sets were refurbished years ago? There was really only 1117T (ex Bayside but now ALSTOMised instead of EDIed), 500M (burnt), 533M (burnt), and the prototype refurbishment set 671M, 1186T and 672M.

Did anyone remember the first ever Connex TV Add? It was some French guy (or a guy with a french accent) standing next to an Alstom Comeng saying something like "Hi, my name is Connex and i run the Melbourne trains now"?

That guy was singer/actor Harry Connick Jnr. (ie Connick's rather than Connex).

There were 3 versions in the series, one saying they'd named it after him, another saying that "Melbourne is flat" mocking the former Hillside name, and the 3rd saying that Connex is now his favorite "track".

And it wasn't a Alstom Comeng, as they hadn't being launched at the time of filming the ad. It was simply an unrefurbished Comeng with a blue Connex logo placed over the Hillside logo.

Kind Regards

Craig Smile

What is the ad which had a celebrity (singer I think) who had a last name similar to Conne...x ? I remember my mum commenting that it was a "Harry Connie".

I think the guy had more of a Canadian accent too

edit: thanks Craig

Is it on YouTube or somewhere by any chance? I'm going to search now to see if it is.

Ok, I couldn't find one, but, although unrelated, I found this...

The sign from 510M (IIRC) is actually now in Hobsons Bay Model Railway's clubrooms.  Dunno how it got there - I know a few drivers go there alot.

I remember these when I was a Melbournite and regularly commuting in Melbourne from 99 - 01. I would often gaze at them when I was bored, waiting for an advert to come up, but disappointingly nothing ever appeared, excepted for a repeated monologue, something along the lines of "Train ads....put your ad here....call .....". The coloured leds were kinda cool though.

I think I did see one of these signs on a trip to Melbourne several weeks ago, when a friend and I decided to do a trip of the Alamein line, which in itself was interesting. I believe it displayed the next stop.

On the subject of train ads (more related to Connex and not the ex-ad displays), here is some more links to YouTube.

This one is for that Sheena Easton ad where they are all singing her song and she boards at Burnley Station and they all freak out.

Getting more recent now, here is the Don't Hold Others Back commercial. The website is still active as well!

Yep, that Russian music has its place somehow with Connex's performance (but it was a Metlink ad AFAIK).

Who remembers an old ad on the radio about "Al Clanning of Croydon", complete with the internal sound of a Comeng passing the level crossing (Coolstore Rd, towards Mooroolbark). I think it was Fox or Triple M which had that one back in the mid 90s.

Nope, Don't Hold Others Back was an advertisment by Connex, not by Metlink.

Yes i am sick of seeing trainads everytime i go the club rooms lol
