On the 23 and 24 May 2009 a further 70 AHCF wagons were delivered at Geraldton Port and put onto the rails at Narngulu. The wagons were the final batch in the 180 via CIMC Australia for Mount Gibson Iron/ARG.

Went to the Gindalbie presentation, they are talking about 14 M tpa to Geraldton before they expand to Oakajee. That is a lot of ore for the line as it is. Anyone know how (if) the upgrade is proceeding? They will need more crossing loops and a bit of beef to climb over the range. All the haemetite and magnetite will go by rail, the pipeline is out as an option, so they are planning a new unloader at Geraldton with a tippler.
Good times ahead for midwest rail, perhaps.

Are Midwest Corp (Sinosteel) ever going to use rail?
How many of their wagons are still stored at Narngulu?

Considering Mt Gibsons current trains are only hauling 3 mtpa

It will be interesting to see how they move 14 mtpa into geraldton when their not even moving that amount into esperance on the standard gauge.

I think they will need to upgrade the line again with those tonnages...

Alot of junior miners seem to overstate their projected tonnages to elevate their shareprice, I think by now Mt Gibson should have been exporting far in excess of the current 5mtpa, if you believed their initial projections.

does the mineral sands train still run daily to eneabba and do they still load at two different minesites or just the one. i know they used to load out of the north mine and the south mine. that was A long time ago though.

The mineral sands was running daily to and from South mine only but it has been very stop start lately as there is a big down turn in mineral sands sales. In recent years the length of the train has been 50XE wagons so an heavy train for a single P.

The future is not bright for the operations at Eneabba due to depleting reserves. However, the minerals sands plant at Narngulu is currently being upgraded at a cost of $60 million to process mineral sands exported via Ceduna in S.A. to Geraldton but this will be road hauled to and from Gero Port. One synthetic rutile kiln at Narngulu (as well as one at Capel) meaning the coal only runs a couple of trips a week.

thanks phil. so they don't use the north mine at all eh. any idea what the life span of the south mine is and is there potential for any other mining activity in the area if there is an upturn in mineral sands sales etc.

According to local media yesterday maybe less than a year for Eneabba, though they are still drilling around Eneabba, there are also deposits at Dongara but they in control of the company at Chandela (Muchea).

There is also coal at Eneabba but the likely scenario is for a power station to be built onsite.
  WAGR Chief Commissioner

I feel that Eneabba will follow the same steps as Capel. They were huge reserves. These days in the Southwest there are numerous small pocket reserves being worked. These are from Yarloop in the North to ludlow in the South. All transported by road trains.

The gauge plays no part in it, its the condition of the track that would govern that..

It currently plays a part because of the axle load difference. I do realise that narrow gauge can carry high axel loads to, but you and me both know that the current network into Geraldton is never going to be at 23.5 ton axle load like the trains to Esperance.

I understood that there are Enviro issues in regards to Mining the Eneabba coal seam. Isn't that area part of a National Park or a conservation area.

One of the discoveries from a few years back was subsequently gazetted a National Park.

This proposal is not in any conservation estate, more details are here, (part of their public environmental review):

it was stated on abc radio today that murchison metals had announced that drilling results at the jack hills project indicated there was a lot bigger ore reserves there than at first thought.
