RP get-together - Possibly farewell to the Stony Point A-MTH

Fans of the Stony Point Line should take note:-

The line will be closed and replacement road coaches will operate on Saturday and Sunday 15th and 16th March.  The late evening train each way on Friday 14th March will also be a road coach.

I understand that among several works taking place over this weekend will be the commissioning of the new signalling which will permit sprinters to operate the service.

Any definite news will be posted here as it comes to light but at this stage it is a possibility that the 6.12pm down and 7.15pm up on Friday 14th might be the last loco hauled workings

Just in case Gwiwer's prediction is true, I will keep Fri 14/3 free for a farewell trip. Will anyone join me?

Second question: does anyone have a "farewell" headboard and does anyone have contacts we could call on who could have it fitted?

Obviously, but Sprinters will be replacing the A class+MTH cars in the future, as has been discussed many, many, many times.

There'll still be the Long Island Steel train running along the line as far south as the junction (between Tyabb and Hastings) - but you better get your shots of locomotive hauled trains south of Hastings quick! Sad

I'd suggest you go on the second last just as a precaution. They love finding excuses not to run the last Stony on a friday night !

I wonder what will happen to the MTH cars ?

Wouldn't you just add them to an H set. I know they're not technically the same - but so what?

And Connex could sell/lease/whatever them to Vline, before you say that they are different companies.

I wouldnt have thought they were Connex's to sell.

I reckon some will go to preservation to be used between 795M and 797M

No luck in finding out when the Sprinters take over, the worlds nicest conductor doesn't even know.

But I could well be in Frankston this weekend so I might attend.

I'd like to come, but Friday's (an all other weekdays) are out for me.

I shall have to be content with the trip that a few of us made on Australia Day.

With any luck, they will keep running until, say, the 1405 up on a Saturday. That would be much better.

Im happy to stand corrected here.. . but wouldnt they trial the Sprinters to ensure all things were a "go" signalling..sighting..  ticketing ( lol ) .. and any other thing that might effect their introduction.
Even by current standards ...just starting them on 'a' particular day seems a bit chnacing your luck !!

Well, they can do signal commissioning on Saturday and testing on Sunday.

When did the ARHS Museum get one of the greasers allocated to Steamrail?

Although an MTH would look good at the Museum - it could also make a DRC tour profitable.

Count me in. I'll be on it anyway regardless, so I might just go down there and back. Whether I bring Metro Clippy along is yet to be decided.

There is one Sprinter proposed to start some empty testing for the week starting on Monday 17/03 on the Stony Point corridor - but revenue services - try June or later. Don't worry about the "last run" of the A Class & MTH just yet. Much testing to be done first.

Oh, its criminal, they scrapped 798M, 799M and 800M.

Not one motor between 791M and 800M was manufactured with asbestos fire retardant under the interior panelling.

501M should have been saved.
It nearly was, only being dumped in the pit  (with 785M) in January 1991.

Confirming, the new automatic & track control signalling system between Frankston and Stony Point will be commissioned from 2000 on Friday 14th March 2008.

Points and signals along the line will now be controlled by Frankston Signal Box, by a Westrace system. A duplicate display screen will be fitted at Centrol.

I'm considering making a visit to ride the last few services under automatic electric staff / train staff and ticket.

Just an update on the introduction of Sprinter workings to Stony Point. Next weeks testing cancelled. Maybe one late evening (After PM peak) trip for signal sighting purposes during the week only. Empty Training runs for sprinters in the corridor now scheduled to start Tuesday after Easter (25 March).

Scheduled start for Sprinter revenue services still quoted as 26th April. Date may slip back yet. No guarantees on any start-up date yet.

Removal of old signalling sytem and commissioning of new system scheduled for this weekend. Last Stony Point Dn/Up trip Friday night cancelled - as are all the weekend services - all replaced by Buses. Start-up of normal services again AM Monday. 2nd last return trip Friday night will certainly be the last revenue service with old signalling system, unless there is some last-minute equipment failures to loco or cars which is a common scenario for that service unfortunately, especially with hot weather forecast.

As has been mentioned (and referred to in my post which mjja quoted to start this thread)

the last trains on Friday 14th (the9.30pm down and 10.20pm up) are replaced by a bus

Therefore the final train service of the day will be the 6.12pm down and 7.15pm up.

As of tonight the train crews have no idea when sprinter operation will commence.  They have not yet received any information as to how revenue will be collected post-MTH car TVM and pre-Myki.

There has been one unconfirmed suggestion that signal sighting tests will include an N-class over the weekend.  There will be sighting tests run with thte A-class prior to start of services Monday morning, meaning that despite a total occupation of the line south of Frankston there will be some train movements along the line and not in accordance with any timetable.

The introduction date for sprinters is slipping all the time.  There have been more false alarms and proposed dates for this than many other recent projects with new dates being quoted by almost anyone who might be in a position to know.

The single hard fact now is that sprinters will NOT be taking over the service as of next week and therefore Friday's train wil NOT be the last loco+coaches trip.

That being said I am hoping to be available for a run at some time in the day (possibly including the 6.12 but only Frankston - Leawarra as it is not now the final run) and will be linesiding most of the day.

See you there.
  route14 Chief Commissioner

So you live near Leawarra?  How inconvenienced you are by the bi-hourly service for being one station away from Frankston.

There is the 790/789/791 etc as an alternative.

The bus alternatives are at best unreliable and at worst hopelessly infrequent.

There is no weekend service at all on the nearest route apart from a single trip in one direction on Saturday mornings.

The train for all its faults is more reliable than the Cranbourne Transit (789/90/1) bus routes.

I find the present train timetable works perfectly well for me.  I can take the first up and last return trains quite comfortably fitting in with my City working hours.

OK, it looks like this won't be the final farewell to loco hauled pass trains to Stony Point, but hey, why not go ahead with the event?

I will be there at 6pm on the dot or as close as I can make it. Those of you who don't know me can recognize me by the fact that Clippy will be with me.
