Yes they are two different versions of the overlays. The date indicates the variance.

If you have a newer version, please upload.

Brian, downloaded the one listed for 8 May 2014 and discovered the file itself is; hairyleg_aus_tracks_rev04_2014_05_01 so both 8May2014 and 1May2014 are the same file.

I did an accuracy test of a hand held GPS with Google earth when I walked the actual rail route of part of the Southport QLD line in suburban Southport. The light blue line on my attached image shows the GPS trace as we walked along the former Southport QLD rail route now the path marked by my blue pointer. After leaving the park we walked south along Ewan St’s footpath past Terrigal Cresent in the west of Southport. Yet the resultant GPS trace is slightly north of the pathway and east of the Ewan St’s footpath although the GPS was in my pocket. I am very satisfied with the very close match up of Hairyleg’s pink plot with my blue plot from walking the actual rail route Smile This is just north of Loders Creek, the Southport Cemetery and former Showground on Queen St.

I started my own mapping of abandoned lines in NSW then discovered your work. WOW.
Although I did get the lithgow line a little wrong.
Thank you hairyleg for such a comprehensive masterpiece.

Glad I could help.

But don't let this stop you from trying to contribute more to this work; it is in no way finished.

If it helps when you next update maps the coal loader at Werris creek has been in use since around 2005. You can see the loader and some new rail line.

Hi Hairyleg,

For your proposed lines layer, perhaps this map will interest you:
http://voommaps.com/historical-maps/county-of-cumberland-maps/

The County of Cumberland plan had quite a few railways planned for Sydney that never eventuated, especially in the Eastern Suburbs.

Thanks, Chuffa,

This was the prompting I needed to force me to "pull my finger out", and finally get around to sorting out "Whereits Crook".
I was hoping to find some better resolution air photos than what Google Earth has to offer here, but haven't been able to source any, so I have now used these and will include the results in my next update.

Voom,

I have had a lot of dealings with old maps, particularly ones with rail lines marked on them, and particularly around Sydney, but I have NEVER seen some of those suggested lines before.

That is an interesting set. I might see if I can stitch them together and see if they can be geo-referenced as a single map.

OK, sorry, just worked it out!

So for anyone who may have the same problem, .kmz is a zipped version of .kml , but is not recognised by Winzip.  Use Winrar (for example) to unzip the .kmz file.  Then all will be OK.

Just like to take the opportunity to thanks Hairylegs for sharing this wonderful piece of work with us.  Thanks!

These maps are really great, thanks for sharing all the hard work.

I had a similar sort of idea but also adding in layers etc to show what the gauge is, what the operating status is, speed limit, who the track operator is etc.  Does your dataset have the capability to add this information and have a layer toggle function?

Also, I wonder if this can be incorporated into a website that overlays onto a Google Maps for quick access?

Again, great work!

There's an Eas/West section above Botany that dead ends at Baker St, this continues across Baker St into the next yard a fair way. The land is built, flat, the rail is still visible in Baker St. I have pics.

Amazing work HairyLeg!

Just wondering if anyone knows of any congestion (passenger, not rolling stock) mapping tools/KMZ/KML that could be used to produce a map version similar to the image in this article: http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/crisis-looms-for-sydney-train-commuters-20150213-13eao8.html

Google provides road traffic congestion data, but not other modes of transport to my knowledge, and I don't think you can get an "overall" or "peak times" view anyway.

Thanks,
TrainGirl

G'day Hairyleg,

Is there somewhere that you have put up a Legend showing the colour coding of the basic types of lines - I can work out the main NSWGR lines and a couple of the others, but a lot is still a mystery.

Regards, Brian

EDITED

Just found the colour code in a very early post - thanks for all your effort - it is an amazing work !

Hi Hairyleg
Hopefully you end up with this post. I am Currently  researching the location of the Permanent sugar tramways that operated out of the Harwood sugar refinery ( 2 lines known to exist) , I can pass them on to be put on your overlay.

Interestingly a person has posted similar 2 July 2017 on the yahoogroup for Light Railway Research Society of Australia so maybe there is someone else on the same topic and the two of you can compare notes and assist each other. Hairyleg is also a member of that yahoogroup so contact can be made that way if Hairyleg does not see your message here. Quite a few LRRSA members are on both Railpage and the LRRSA yahoogroup so it is not a competition between either forum as both complement each other.

Cheers

OK, it is time to ask the Wise people here for some help. Being a steam era dinosaur probably explains my ignorance; I trust you will be patient with me.

I have tried to access the Downloads section, also tried using the link above that Bevans gave almost 12 months ago. Have tried on several occasions, each time without success.

Just now, trying, I received a message as follows:-

Can anyone advise further, please? Thanks in advance.

Hi hbedriver.

I get the same error message at the moment. Hope that it can be fixed soon because Hairyleg's overlay is fanatastic.

I have reported the bug to Railpage.
