Have anyone of you people walked on the 3 Tarwin Floodplain bridges?  I have for a fact.

The Blackspur Creek bridge looks in a pretty bad state, but their are some small holes due to the bridge deck breaking.  This bridge is probably in the worst condition out of the 3 bridges.

The 1st West Branch bridge is the 2nd bridge and has a broken bridge deck, but has some small holes in it.  The ballast is still in place on this section.  The bridge is probably the 2nd best out of these bridges.

The last bridge the 2nd West Branch bridge is seen from the highway, like the 1st West Branch bridge.  The 2nd West branch bridge you can not see as much as the first one.  This bridge has a deck isn't really in a pretty bad state, but is unsafe according to the Great Southern Rail Trail and South Gippsland Shire Council.  The bridge has small holes on the sides last time I walked on the bridges in 2008.  The bridge is probably the best out of the three.

The main reason these bridges are in a bad state are due to the track removal train, which dismantled the Leongatha - Welshpool section in 1994.  The Tarwin bridge, near Meeniyan seen on the highway needed to be strengthened due to the weight of it.  Weathering caused this also, after all these bridges haven't been maintained for 15 years (1994).  The larger bridges in between this bridge and Koonwarra in the Tarwin Floodplain (West Branch 1 and Blackspur Creek) were vulnerable to the bridge deck breaking.  The 2nd West Branch bridge was lucky not to have a major bridge deck break, due to it been smaller, than the other 2 bridges.

I walked all 3 bridges the other day

Black Spur Creek Bridge, 13 x 15 foot spans

Deck Is all mostly In one peise but has dropped a little In one spot and the deck has some small trees growing on It.

Tarwin River West Branch #1, 25 x 20 foot spans

This bridge looks like It Is In the worst condition as It Is the most exposed to the elements.
The deck has many holes In It where the timber and ballast have fallen through, also has some small trees growing on It at the up end.

Tarwin River West Branch #2, 25 x 20 foot spans

The deck has a few holes In It but Is by far the condition bridge out of the three.

All 4 timber bridges In the Tarwin River Valley have had what looks like quick fixes done to them such as added props (Trawin River West Branch #2), timber blocks chocking up the bases of the piles/piers (sitting on the ground)

VicRoads has plans to realign the South Gippsland Highway along the North side of the Black Spur Creek/Tarwin River West Branch Bridges, there for cutting through that hill that runs between #1 and #2 bridge.
(the hill that many people once climbed up to view trains crossing both bridges)

Id dare say long road viaducts would be required to span the Black Spur Creek swamp and the Tarwin River West Branch River Plain.

Zomer, I'd like to see pictures more like the Lang Lang photo you posted,  with the station and train included.
I especially like the photo of Koo Wee Rup in the bottom right-hand corner of your modelling diagram:

The J515 wen to Leongatha in 1995, but didn't go on the Foster or Welshpool section.

Was there ever a farewell Barry Beach tour In 1992

My Fotopic site has a shot of the last train to Yarram which I went for a ride on with a few PB guys. The K/D3 trip to Foster was also an excellent trip (also has some photos there) and I had an enjoyable cabride on the K coming home!  Smile

K183 did travel on the line to Leongatha ... was back in may 1993/4 or there abouts exact time / year eludes me....

153 & 190 were also to make the trip but alas 190 failed in suburban Melb, it was dropped off & sent home in disgrace....

It was supposed to be a triple header trip...but a DH trip was just as good....

Anyway the sound that 153 & 183 made on leaving Nyora on the up was .... well super colossal & nearly made up for 3 locos !!! lol

K183 cutting off @ Nyora to be turned. (to allow for shuttles to be run from Leongatha Funnel first to Korumburra)

I went on a fan trip to Welshpool in 1989 - it was hauled by J515 to Leongatha and then a T class beyond. There was a passenger trip in July 1991 to Foster for 'Lady Writers' - it was an immaculate T class + the Norman car.

I have quite a few pics of trains & stations beyond Leongtha including the last Yarram trip - haven't yet mastered the trick for posting pics.

Great pictures there Ballast Plough. Nice to see some pictures from the Leongatha line. The government proposed to do that up but never got done, and still hasn't (As has been said in this thread more than likely).

- Turning the K at Foster. Not sure if Yarram ever had a turntable but at that point in time, Foster was the closest operating turntable which meant the loco just had to run tender first beyond Foster on the down.

- False departure. Just a term used for photo purposes where the train simulates a departure and chuffs out of the platform allowing all those on-board to get a photo as if the train really was departing.

- Austeam in 1988. I can't recall any trips down there. It predominately seemed to be Albury / Seymour and Bendigo trips.

False departure from Yarram

I know it isn't the station I'm about to quote. Do you guys think that picture of the Yarram Station looks like a similar picture of the Wonthaggi Station when it was in service? The goods yard looks the same. The background looks like Wonthaggi, because it had heaps of grass, their was a junkyard dairy factory, cement and other smaller industries next to the yards in the old days. The background at Wonthaggi has less grass, a BIG W mall know, tracks removed, goods shed has signs on it, some of the industries like the old junkyard made way for BIG W, I heard from a friend that the cement factory was removed around 80' or 90s and a more are placed industries in that area. There might be a cement industry at Wonthaggi or the cement place that closed in the 80;s or 90;s, might have moved. I know it ain't Wonthaggi, but how close is it to Yarram?Question That's what I think. Very Happy
Wonthaggi has a brick station (very much the same as Leongatha)

Yarram only had a timber railway station (painted pail green, only the the goods shed survives at Yarram)

Great pictures! Have the tracks been ripped up between Cranbourne and Nyora yet?

No, it would be un-necessary and costly at the moment, if the line does get reopened (to at least Cranbourne East) the track cleared of vegetation and  be resleepered and electrified, plus two grade seperations.

I have 3 question for all you people.

Q.1. What was the largest railway station on the South Gippsland Railway Line? The stations must be, until before 1995 when Cranbourne was been rebuilt, so that's means the old station. The station must be on the South Gippsland Line, from Dandenong - Yarram and also the Wonthaggi Line. My 4 guesses are either Korumburra, Leongatha, Foster or Koo - Wee - Rup.

Definantly Korumburra for sure!!

Wonthaggi:

Leongatha:

I dont have a picture of Foster station.  Plenty of the yard but the station building is blocked by the train!  Smile

 And regards to photo requests:
Zomer, do you have pictures of a Koala Siding train, Barry Beach, a Leongatha passenger service, The Foster Line (beyond Leongatha), Train to Toora, Welshpool or even Yarram?

Good idea Zomer! I request photos from Cranbourne - Leongatha, especially Koo Wee Rup and Lang Lang. As much as possible would be great thanks.

Does anyone have pictures of Clyde, Tooradin, Monomeith, more of Nyora, Lang Lang, Bena, Ruby, Koonwarra, Tarwin, Meeniyan, Stoney Creek, Buffalo, Fish Creek, Foster, Toora, even though there is a picture, Agnes (Barry Beach Junction), Welshpool, Hedley, Gelliondale and Alberton Railway stations, or even yards.  I would love to see some pictures of these stations in V/Line service, before been dismantled or what there like now.  Mainly trains running to these stations.Very Happy

Does anyone have pictures of a train going over the large Tarwin River Bridge, near Meeniyan next to the South Gippsland highway or when in service as a bridge.

Tarwin River Bridges at Tarwin

Has anyone got pictures of the track been dismantled beyond (Leongatha - Yarram, Foster, Welshpool or Barry Beach Junction.)
There used to be a photo In the Korumburra Railway Station (from a Newsrail magazine) of a T class on the Tarwin River West Branch #1 bridge hauling a rail recovery train loaded with rails from around Hoddle.

I'd say It's still there somewhere
