The CFA says it was around 1.30pm the fire started...thats nearly impossible because the train was long past Muckleford by the time the fire started it arrived at Maldon around 12.30pm and didnt pass Muckleford until 2.50pm and 4.05pm later in the afternoon.

Not necessarily. The sparks could have been come from the steam train before 12:30 and smouldered, growing until it becomes a fire. 1:30pm could be the time it was noticed and reported.

D3621,

The train was delayed leaving Maldon in the morning, and did not run to time. A diesel was substituted for the second train.

From VGR's facebook just now

Victorian Goldfields Railway
We have discussed the current state of the countryside that we travel through with our local CFA brigade and have decided to operate a heriatge diesel locomotive until further notice.

Both the grass and the bush between Maldon and Castlemaine are very dry at the moment and we feel that it is the responsible way to operate.

The journey is still very enjoyable and we look forward to seeing you here on the Victorian Goldfields Railway.

Last saturday night had the pleasure of travelling to & from the Maldon Food & Wine Festival onboard the special organised by the VGR for the event. Once again it was well patronised and having Y133 up front instead of a steam loco did not dampen the atmosphere onboard. Arriving  back at Castlemaine at 23:50 included a cross with the backend of an Up departing freight.

Febuary will see the VGR only running on Sunday's. This will allow for some maintanence work to be carried out along the route during the week.

Early last week (Tuesday 15th) saw the final door frame hung on the Carriage Shed at Castlemaine. By the middle of this week the iron sheeting was all in place. The coming months will see the sleepers and trackwork get underway.

If anyone would like a cab ride in Y133, this weekend is the time to do it. I've heard that there is plenty of vacant positions @ $30.

Cheers, Russell

It must be disappointing to have to leave the steamers parked cold, but I agree that it is a responsible decision.

Full marks to VGR.

Hi all,

Here's some photos from the first train for the day on Monday. Quite a good ride with the Y up the front and plenty of noise on the grades 8)

Steam is back.
VGR will start running Steam Loco's from today (Good Friday) after nearly 2 months of running a diesel loco.

It will be a busy month for the Railway as they have a charter today, followed by tonight's Wine, Beer, Soft Drink & Nibbles train departing Maldon at 7pm. Plenty of space still available if you ring and book by midday today.
If you turn up at Maldon Station tonight without booking you will miss out on the nibbles platter, but get a great night ride through the bush as the Loco clears it's throat for the first time in a few months.

As usual, the last weekend of the school holidays (April 13th & 14th), will see the Steam Trains for Kids weekend in action. 1st train departs Maldon at 10:30 am each day for the return trip to Muckleford. Plenty of entertainment around Maldon Station to fill a few hours.
Pre-booking online at the VGR website will get you cheaper tickets.

Sunday April 21st will see VGR starting the day out of Castlemaine for another special event. The Goldfields Steam Train Challenge is on. Dust off your deadly treadly, pump up the tyres and join the fun as you can either race the train from Castlemaine (10am departure) to Maldon or the return leg as a leisurely ride departing Maldon at 11:30.

More info on all events is available from the VGR website.

Cheers

Heard todays charter ran with K190 and 5 carriages. I imagine the wine and cheese consist would have been the same.

Trains are also running on Monday 1st April being a public holiday.

Photo and video of K190 leading a 5 carriage consist at Castlemaine today.  It's great to see some steam action again:

On the way to Echuca yesterday, stopped in at the VGR to see the steam back in action. Decided to grab a few shots of the train on the 1430 service before continuing my journey North.

Well this looks very interesting, with Steamrail and VGR planning to run trains every Saturday as a joint venture, along with a major steam enthusiasts event later this year:

IMHO the more interesting part is this. Might see some more variety on the mainline as well as the VGR Smile

For its part the VGR is providing its line and infrastructure along with its locomotives and carriages which will also be available for mainline use.

I was thinking the same thing.  Perhaps a J-class steamer running at up to 80 km/h along the mainline?  Yes please!

Hi all,

I finally got around to uploading the limited shots I took on the Good Friday wine and cheese train. Great way to spend the evening in the BW behind the K. Smile
