Yesterday (8/8/09) dad and I went over to Maldon to help out do some work on the locos. When we got there, we ended up helping move J549's slide bars into the shed next to J549. We didn't realise how heavy slide bars are until we started moving them. They ended up taking 4 of us to move them one at a time. If it hadn't been for the use of a wheelbarrow, it would've been very back breaking work.
Dad's experience from being a train examiner on the railways came in real handy when it came to replacing a few brake blocks on Y 133. Dad, another volunteer and I worked on the old girl. As I was the smallest, I had to get underneath to wind off the slack adjusters so as to make it easier to replace the blocks. Although the last brake block we tried to put on, no matter how far the slack adjustors were wound off or that, we had some trouble with it so we ended up putting one of the better brake blocks we took off the loco back on. Even though it has a month of so of meat left, at least it's on the outside where it's easier to get to. All in all, it was good to do some work on a loco and to get my hands dirty!

Oh, while I remember, when I was there (8/8/09), J 515 was on a driver experience train, J 541 was parked outside the workshop with an empty boiler as it was going to have an exam. And K 160 was in the workshop smokebox to smokebox with J 549.

Good to hear that work on the J is coming along.
The Driver Experience train was a bit late into Castlemaine. The first one was around 3.30pm then the second was an evening departure getting onto 7pm. Sounded good going back, climbing out of town into the bushland.
Also see that the Picnic at Muckleford is coming up on Sept. 5th. That day will see Steam and DERM action. Hopefully there will be a mixed or two running.
Cheers

Any news if K160 will be in service for that weekend? As it would be great to see her going one last time. I've never ridden behind K160.

The firebox is a bit thin in some places on K160 and will be needing some repairs on that but it's not like it's going to be put out to pasture!

Looking through the rain today up towards the bush, I'm pretty sure K 160 is hauling today's trains.

Good to see 160 having a run, not often you get to see the old girl in steam of recent times. Whats up with the J's? One out of coal, the other leaking a small storm per minute?

What i meant by that was, i want to see her one more time before she possibly goes in for storage. As she isn't in service much anymore.

- Thanks Wolfpac, All of the times i've been there the J has been in service. So thats what i meant also.

Was over at the railway today. Reference pegs have been placed at Muckleford for the UP end connection of the goods shed loop. Since the yard was re-built in 1996 the points have always been there, but the remaining section of track was not built:

K160 was duty loco. The loco has received a spruce up in the form of some paint on the boiler and tender. Looks pretty spiffy.

It is still there, it has been moved more towards the DOWN end of the siding.

I notice that the Picnic at Muckleford is this Saturday. Does anyone know what will be running yet? I can't see anything about "Steam on Show", so does that mean it's just normal passenger trains to an expanded timetable?

Should be a good day up at the VGR anyway. Smile

They will be running a steam loco and DERM on that day. By a look at the TT they will cross at Muckleford.
For those interested at going to Muckleford, you can catch trains from either Castlemaine (departing 10.10, 11.35, 13.30, 15.15 and 17.00) or Maldon (8.45, 10.00, 11.45, 13.30 and 15.15).
For viewing will be 35 stalls, 4 car clubs, a few forges, vintage machinery, wineries and for the kids a jumping castle and animal farm.
Train ticket includes entry to the Picnic, if coming by car pay at the gate.

1 steam loco?

I am sure that there are good reasons for only one steam loco on the day.

My question is: which one will it be?

Evening All

All I know is that there will be a steam loco and DERM running on the day. I would think that the last train out of Castlemaine for the day would be steam hauled. Work the TT backwards from there.
Looking at VGR website, train fares - Adults $15, Child $10. Picnic entry Adult $10, Conc $5, kids free.
They have times Castlemaine & Maldon to Muckleford and return.

Thanks Murray.

I don't know if I will be able to make it this time around due to another possible commitment.

Is there still a wooden H van at Muckleford, or are they all at Maldon?

Both the H vans are still at Muckleford, and have been since they returned from the Filming of "Ned Kelly" at Mornington in 2002.

Did anyone get to the Picnic today? I was busy and could not attend.
