PIDS going bonkers

Jim,

How do these work when the manual operator isn't using the same computer as the one that drives the screens?  How are you going to deal with the problem of the mouse running around the screen the whole time while the operator fumbles with the dodgy interface?

I've noticed this for a Cranbourne train before:

Richmond
South Yarra
Hawksburn
Toorak
Armadale
Malvern
Caulfield
Carnegie
Murrumbeena
Hughesdale
Oakleigh
Huntingdale
Clayton
Westall
Springvale
Sandown Park
Noble Park
Yarraman
Dandenong
Merinda Park
Cranbourne
Berwick
Beaconsfield
Officer
Pakenham
Frankston

I will take a picture next time I see it.

There is a teleporting device at Cranbourne and the stations on the list after Cranbourne but don't tell anyone it is a big secret.

No seriously, I have not seen this happen at Southern Cross, I don't even look at the lists as I go all the way to Cranbourne.

Despite Webslave telling us how complicated it is to signal trains at Flinders Street Station, I agree with Tranzitjim's original analysis of the problem - the PIDs or their data source have failed to null out the extra stops from previous services with more stops.

Since this is not happening every time, some more analysis might be needed to find the exact circumstances under which it is occurring.

Eg. A refresh may occur automatically when the signallers have stacked several future services on a platform, whereas a refresh may not occur if they change the current platform information 'live'.

It is an important clue that this bug did not occur with the previous monitors.

On the topic of PIDs, Richmond has just received new ones on the up ends of all platforms except 7/8 which already have them.

This being the 3rd or 4th system they have tried there in the past 5 years, and have fail? I have lost track... Confused

Marcus, I'm disappointed in you. I'm surprised you haven't seen the repulsive new shelters and LCD PIDs at the up ends of the platform. They're the first PIDs in the location.

On the plus side, they're appropriately as repulsive as the rest of the design for that station so they don't stand out.

I knew I had one somewhere, but couldn't find it until last night.

I took this pic on the 27th October last year.

I noticed the hole digging over the past few weeks and wonders what they were - they must have appeared since my last visit:

The displays I had in mind were the scrolling LED displays above the city end ramps - I can't find a photo at the moment...

I noticed the other day that the PID system now displays the suburban stops on Traralgon/Sale/Bairnsdale V/Line services. The summary boards in the concourse display "all stations" services as "Limited express via Richmond". Confused

Does anyone on this forum know who makes the PIDs for use at Flinders St?
I know the SmartGuide system integrators are the ones that made the ones for Richmond...?

Today I spotted this at North Melbourne platform 1.

"All Flinders Street Trains Will Terminate At Werribee Until Further Notice.
Alternative Transport Will Be Arranged."

I was assuming no trains are running via Seddon today since I saw several empty sparks terminating at Sunshine.

I snapped this the other week at Sunshine - a Ballarat train 'stopping all stations except Parwan'.

FYI we also skipped Rowsley, Bank Box, Ingliston...

Noted yesterday at Sunshine that the PIDS on platform 1 had an up V/Line service had its destination listed as Footscray!

Didn't note the same issue from the up train I was on about six hours later! Perhaps its just some trips.

Interesting, they used to day 'express  to Ardeer, Deer Park to Rockbank, Melton to Bachuss Marsh, then all stations to Ballarat'. (Skipping the suburban stations, Deer Park West/Caroline Springs, and Parwan)  Rolling Eyes

Oh, I see that at Werribee all the time on Geelong up's, I seem to remember seeing Flinders Street too. (Not taking suburban passengers)

The Gippsland ups are always shown as Flinders Street (not taking suburban passengers) trains (but I have seen Dandenong and Richmond pop up occasionally), apart from at Flinders Street where the PID will just say STHN CROSS.

I should mention, coming through North Melbourne this afternoon, The PIDs were showing 3:14 WERRIBEE (followed by) 6:14 WERRIBEE. Sydenham was doing something similar, I didn't stay to Find out more about their behaviour.

They are the old "flip dot" displays, commissioned in the 1980s, decomissioned in early 2007 when the current LCD displays were provided

Either they forgot a station (or two) in the Altona loop, or ignored the closure of Paisley and Galvin station some 25 years ago.

And what's with this description where the list of stations is supposed to start?
Unless its a new station between Melbourne Central and Flagstaff. Rolling Eyes

Nothing wrong with that at all.

Look at it again.

"Runs express Newport to Laverton."

It's going down the middle, the express track, and not through the Altona Loop.

"heisdeadjim"

I think the point is that the "..." appears twice, each occurance is supposed to represent a station that is not stopped at. A train skipping the Altona loop skips three active railway stations, not two. (leading to Gauntlet's theory)
  heisdeadjim Chief Commissioner

The assumption is of course one lot of ... equals one station. Ain't necessarily so. Razz

Remember that route is the only line in Melbourne where there's more than one way to get to the terminating location. When an express run is loaded into PRIDE, Seaholme Altona and Westona simply don't exist at all, because it's a different run.

The two lines are simply spacers designed to fill up the screen, nothing more.

Everywhere else, it's different. The ... does signify a missing station, because it's the same run - say a down Belgrave SAS versus the down Belgrave express versus the doen Belgrave "Puffing Billy special"

The route is the same but stations are deleted from the PRIDE listing to comply with a specific runs stopping conditions.
